Wilmington – Criminal sentencings for a range of crimes were handed down this morning in New Castle County Superior Court, Attorney General Beau Biden’s office announced today.  Several of those sentencings are highlighted below.

Trio sentenced for 2010 killing during botched Wilmington robbery

Today Reuben Stanford, Dawune Boardley, and Jyaire Dennis were sentenced to prison for their roles in a November, 2010 Wilmington robbery that resulted in the shooting death of a co-conspirator.

On November 30, 2010 Stanford, Boardley, and Dennis, along with Daryl Teat committed a robbery at Ray’s Deli in the 1200 block of Northeast Boulevard in Wilmington.  During the robbery the store clerk fled and Stanford fired a shot toward the clerk, striking Teat instead.  Teat died from his wounds.  Stanford age 21, pled guilty to Murder 2nd Degree on December 22, 2011.  Boardley, age 20, pled guilty to Robbery 1st Degree and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony on January 10, 2012 and Jyaire Dennis, age 18, pled guilty to Robbery 1st Degree and Conspiracy 2nd Degree on November 17, 2011 for their roles in the crime.

Superior Court Judge Mary M. Johnston sentenced Stanford to 15 years in prison, Boardley to 6 years in prison, and Dennis to 3 year in prison.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorneys General Cynthia Faraone and Mark Conner.

Former Priest sentenced to jail for theft from parishoner

Today Father Michael Angeloni, age 62, was sentenced to prison for stealing over $300,000 from a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Child in Brandywine Hundred, where he had served as Assistant Pastor.  The Attorney General’s office initiated an investigation in February, 2011 after its Senior Protection Initiative received a report of suspicious financial activity on the victim’s account. The investigation revealed that Father Angeloni solicited money from the victim on multiple occasions to pay certain expenses when, in fact, the money was used for other purposes. The New Castle County Grand Jury indicted Angeloni in August, 2011 on one count of Theft Over $100,000.  Angeloni pled guilty on November 17, 2011.

Today, during his remarks at sentencing the prosecutor noted that between August, 2008 and February, 2011 Father Angeloni had used his position of trust to take the funds from a parishioner who was 86 years-old at the time of the indictment, and that Angeloni had also admitted to an investigator that he had taken donations from the offering collection plate.  The prosecutor acknowledged that Angeloni had a gambling addiction, and noted that casino records showed that he continued to gamble through 2011, including on the day he was indicted.

Superior Court Judge Diane Clarke Streett sentenced Angeloni to one year in prison followed by probation and ordered him to repay $305,425 to the victim.  In addition, she ordered him to have no contact with the victim, casinos, or other gambling establishments, to continue receiving gambling treatment, and to obtain a mental health evaluation and follow any recommended treatment.

Bank robbers sentenced to lengthy prison sentences

Today, Christopher West and David Matthews were sentenced by Superior Court Judge Diane Clarke Streett to prison in unrelated cases where they committed a series of New Castle County robberies, including 5 bank robberies.

West, age 26, was charged with one count of Robbery 1st Degree and one count of Robbery 2nd Degree for robbing 3 homes and 4 banks during a crime spree he committed in the summer of 2011.  West pled guilty on January 9, 2012.  Matthews, age 39, was charged with one count of Robbery 1st Degree for the April 29, 2011 robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank. Matthews was convicted following a trial in New Castle County Superior Court on November 3, 2011.

West was sentenced as an Habitual Offender, which subjects defendants to enhanced sentences, and he received a 25 years prison sentence.  Matthews, who had a history of felony drug, weapons, and forgery offenses, was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
