New recipe cards draw attention to Delaware produce

DOVER – A series of new recipe cards will soon be popping up at farmstands and farmers’ markets across the state, giving shoppers instant ideas on how to prepare delicious Delaware produce.Blueberries

The handy recipe box-sized free cards from the Delaware Department of Agriculture feature recipes for blueberries, cucumbers, kale, spinach, radishes, squash, jalapenos, pumpkins, asparagus, sweet corn, eggplant, carrots, tomatoes and strawberries.

“These cards give shoppers delicious ideas on feeding their families with fresh vegetables and fruits direct from Delaware farms,” said Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee. “The cards make it easy to create great, healthy meals, and promote First State products at the same time.”

Visitors to the Department of Agriculture building at the Delaware State Fair, July 19-28, will get the first opportunity to pick up the free recipe cards. They also will be distributed to farmstands and farmers’ markets around the state.

The recipes were submitted by local farms, farmers’ markets, a food writer, the Delaware Center for Horticulture and the Food Bank of Delaware. In addition to recipes, the cards also highlight when items are in season, how to identify ripe fruits and vegetables and nutrition information.

The cards include recipes for blueberry peach crumble, Southwestern style corn and Oriental asparagus salad from Loblolly Acres, Woodside; squash casserole, chilled peanuts and pumpkin seeds, stuffed cherry tomatoes and stuffed jalapenos from Little Wagon Produce, Greenwood; spinach with Canadian bacon and Greek salad from the Riverwalk Farmers’ Market Downtown Milford; eggplant parmesan and copper pennies from Western Sussex Farmers’ Market; strawberry pie from the Smyrna Farmers’ Market; spicy blueberry and cucumber salad from the Delaware Soybean Board; blueberry salsa from the Food Bank of Delaware; baked kale chips from the Delaware Center for Horticulture; and citrus radish salad from Denise Clemons, columnist for the Cape Gazette.
