Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Advancing Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | News | Date Posted: Friday, August 2, 2013

Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as chair of the National Governors Association – allowing me to focus nationwide attention on the topic of employing people with disabilities. In that time, more than 60 meetings and two summits were held with advocates, business leaders, researchers and policymakers across the country. And as a result of those efforts, a blueprint report released today lays out concrete steps states and businesses can take to provide opportunities that benefit both individuals with disabilities and companies that employ them. This includes making employment of people with disabilities part of a broader state workforce strategy; finding and supporting more businesses who hire people with disabilities; making states model employers of people with disabilities; and preparing youth with disabilities for the workforce.  Here in Delaware – we’re already moving forward.  Just ask Bruce Fisher, who works as a juvenile probation officer for the Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families and runs a nonprofit organization serving youth in foster care…or….Alyssa Cowin, who uses social media to tirelessly promote the Department of Health and Social Services, where she’s worked for over a year now…or… Santino Ceccotti, an assistant public defender in the Appellate Unit of the Delaware Public Defenders Office.  Their abilities are greater than their disabilities.  Though my time as NGA Chair is ending, our plans to advance employment opportunities for people with disabilities are just beginning. By providing every person with the best possible chance to achieve personal and professional success, we will keep Delaware moving forward.
