Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Honoring Delaware’s Olympians

Over the next few weeks the world’s attention will turn to Brazil as 11,000 athletes from more than 200 countries compete in the Summer Olympic Games. Among those representing our nation are three Delaware Olympians: Caitlin Van Sickle, a Tower Hill graduate and Katelyn Falgowski, a St. Mark’s graduate – both on the Field Hockey team, and Elena Delle Donne, the WNBA star from Ursuline and UD. And we recognize Marquis Dendy, a Middletown High School graduate who was named to the Olympic Track and Field Team, but is unable to compete because of a recent athletic injury.

We can take great pride in these outstanding Delawareans who have represented our state so well with their talent, hard work, and perseverance. We know it takes more than natural ability to succeed at sport’s highest level. It takes the encouragement of coaches, time and sacrifice by parents and caregivers, and often an extended network of support. Our Olympians demonstrate what’s possible when they receive that support, when they have opportunities to compete in school, and when our community values active lifestyles and healthy habits that nurture strong minds and bodies.

Delawareans have followed our local Olympians since their first days playing organized sports. We’ve watched them grow and mature into fine young adults. I’m so pleased that through them our state has a place on this global stage. The Olympics represent the values that lead to opportunities for all to succeed: Hard work. Fair play. Being judged by your ability. Striving for excellence. Our amazing athletes reflect those values, and I’ll be watching the Opening Ceremonies and cheering them on as they compete. They are an inspiration to me, and a great example to our young people – whatever their dreams are. And that will keep Delaware moving forward.
