Dover – Attorney General Beau Biden today announced that Stephen Welch has been named to the position of Chief Kent County Prosecutor.  Welch will direct the 40 prosecutors, legal support, and victim services personnel who prosecute criminal cases throughout the County.

“Steve is a consummate prosecutor and effective manager and a great choice to lead our criminal prosecutions in Kent County, under the direction of the State Prosecutor,” Biden said.

“Steve has a broad range of experience prosecuting crimes in Kent County and has managed all aspects of the office,” said State Prosecutor Kathleen Jennings.  “He currently holds a management position in the Felony Screening Unit, is well respected by those who work with him, and is the go-to guy for advice on criminal law.  We are confident that in his new position Steve will strive for excellence in the pursuit of justice.”

Welch, a graduate of George Washington University Law School, is a 25-year Department of Justice Veteran.  He has handled every type of criminal case, including four capital murder cases, and has headed the Kent County felony crimes, misdemeanor crimes, and felony screening unit.  In addition, Welch has served in specialized prosecutor positions, having worked as the Kent County arson deputy, vehicular homicide deputy, and drug crimes deputy.

Welch begins his new duties in September.
