Delaware Grieves The Loss Of Sgt. Szczerba

Flags To Be Lowered To Half-Staff Until Further Notice

Delaware State SealWilmington – Governor Jack Markell said today that the death of New Castle County Police Officer Joe Szczerba on the line of duty was a tragedy and that the state grieves for his family and his loss.

“Joe Szczerba left his home each day and went to work proud to protect and serve the communities he loved. His death is a tragedy, but his life and his service are an inspiration. While we cannot fathom the pain this has caused his family, our state grieves with them. We will never forget his service or his sacrifice,” Markell said.

Markell said Sgt. Szczerba’s death should serve as a reminder of how difficult a job our law enforcement officers across the state can have.

“If some citizens do not take the time to fathom the strength, courage and commitment that propel our brave men and women in law enforcement, it is because law enforcement’s bravery frees them from having to think about it. This reminds us that so many serve each day, putting themselves at risk for all of us. Please keep Sgt. Szczerba, his family and his fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers,” Markell said.

United States and Delaware State flags will be lowered to half-staff until further notice.
