Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Fastest Growing Employers Say Strong Schools Critical To Job Creation

From the largest companies to the smallest start-ups, we ask Delaware employers every week – what can we do to help you succeed and put more people to work? How can we help you compete, and win?

A new national report asked the top employers at some of America’s fastest growing companies the same questions – what’s your most pressing need for long term growth?  What’s the critical ingredient to put more Americans to work?

The most frequent answer both here in Delaware and in that national report was the same – a growing pool of top talent.

Get more kids graduating from even stronger public schools – kids eager to learn, prepared not only to take on higher-wage and higher tech jobs, but to excel at them.  Get kids earlier and more significant exposure to STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and math  – because other countries are preparing their nation’s kids to compete for those same jobs.

How we’re choosing to meet that need here in Delaware remains a bit different than what you might see in some other places. We believe the greatest difference we can make in a child’s education is to make sure they learn from great teachers – and we have so many of them in Delaware.

Teachers who are our partners in moving our schools forward, in making sure  the next generation of Delaware’s leaders have the same sense of opportunity and possibility those of us who grew up here had when we graduated years ago.

The report from some of those fast growing companies nationally made clear what we’ve known in the First State for years – that great schools both attract and create great jobs.   That we need to keep working together to keep Delaware moving forward.
