U.S. racing officials to hold conference at Delaware Park

DOVER – Horse racing industry officials from around the country will visit Delaware next week for an educational conference hosted by the Delaware Thoroughbred and Harness Racing Commissions.

The April 8-9 event will provide continuing education credits for members of the Racing Officials Accreditation Program, or ROAP, of which Delaware Harness Racing Commission Executive Director Hugh Gallagher serves as chairman.

“We are pleased to again welcome our colleagues from around the United States to Delaware,” Gallagher said. “These programs provide useful information and a good perspective to help officials ensure the integrity of racing.”

The event will include updates and presentations on drug testing initiatives, laboratory standards, legal issues and wagering integrity, among other topics.

Delaware racing officials presenting will be Gallagher; W. Duncan Patterson, chairman of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission and chairman of the Association of Racing Commissioners International; John F. Wayne, executive director of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission; Dr. John T. Peters, DTRC chief veterinarian; and Andrew G. Kerber and Stacey Cohee of the Delaware Department of Justice. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee will welcome the group and provide introductory remarks.

It will be held at Delaware Park, which has hosted similar events since 2005.

“Delaware has become recognized as an educational hub to host these types of roundtable events where officials can find solutions to common problems facing regulators,” Wayne said.

The conference was previously scheduled for October 2012 and canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.
