Governor’s Office Statement on Evraz Suspending its Operations at Claymont Mill

(Wilmington)   Evraz North America, which took control of Claymont Steel in 2008, announced to its employees today that it will be suspending operations at its Claymont mill.

Governor Markell is disappointed that Evraz is idling the Claymont facility.  The global steel industry remains very challenging and DEDO was told that the facility is losing money as it seeks to compete with unfairly traded imports.   The Governor knows that this facility has an outstanding workforce that is second to none.  The Delaware Department of Labor’s rapid response team will coordinate with the plant’s management to provide a variety of services to the employees affected by the idling of the plant.  The Governor and DEDO will continue to work with Evraz to seek every opportunity to get the plant fully operational again.  In the meantime, our thoughts are with the employees and their families at this difficult time.     – Cathy Rossi, Communications Director

Of the 375 employees at the plant, approximately 200 are Delawareans.     Text of the Evraz news release can be found here.
