Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Partnering with Colleges and Universities to Train a Competitive Workforce

Within a few years, more than 60 percent of Delaware jobs will require education or training beyond high school. So our colleges and universities have a more critical role than ever in growing our economy. A perfect example is happening right here at Delaware Tech’s new facility at Sussex County Airport, where students are being trained for jobs in a crucial industry in our state.  Aviation companies like Dassault Falcon prospered even during the recent recession, but good jobs are only available to those who are trained on the right machinery. Del Tech’s new program here gives students access to the latest technology. Our universities are also boosting our economy through innovative research partnerships.  The University of Delaware just received $25 million in state and federal grants, helping support the school’s health science complex as a setting for cutting-edge medical research that has the potential to transform the industry and spawn new health companies. The possibilities are even greater when our universities work together, which is why I’ve proposed supporting the Delaware Cyber Initiative — a partnership with U-D, Del State, and Del Tech to train students and invest in research in cyber security. Hundreds of unfilled positions in this field exist in Delaware today, but the benefits of a thriving cyber sector go beyond those jobs.   We need talented cyber professionals to secure our personal information and our businesses’ intellectual property online. These programs are only the tip of the iceberg of what’s possible.  By partnering with and supporting our colleges and universities to ensure Delawareans have the opportunity to learn skills and do research for growing industries, we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.
