Emergency operations drill underway at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center

Smyrna – The Delaware Department of Correction announces that an emergency operations drill is currently underway at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna. As part of the drill, the facility is being placed in an emergency lockdown, however staff is working to accommodate previously scheduled visits to the facility. No disruption is anticipated to the neighboring community.

The Department emphasizes that no actual emergency is taking place. No members of the community are at risk.

Today’s drill, which was unannounced to most staff, simulates a variety of potential security breaches within the facility to test emergency operations protocols and medical staff response to a major incident. It is part of the Department of Correction’s continuing commitment to staff development and training to ensure the safety and security of its employees, the inmate population, and the community at large.
