Delaware Forest Service Awards 2016 Urban Forestry Grants
Urban and Community Grants
A total of 15 municipalities, homeowner associations, and nonprofits will receive almost $40,000 for community tree projects from the Delaware Forest Service’s 2016 Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program. The program’s goal is to increase tree canopy, beautify community spaces, and promote the benefits of trees. Applicants were required to provide a 50-50 cost share match in cash or in-kind services such as volunteer hours. The competitive grants are open to all municipalities, community associations, and certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations within the State of Delaware. Awards ranged from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $5,000 in one of two project categories, tree planting or tree management, and eligible projects must be completed on public lands within the community. Priority was given to first time applicants, Tree Friendly Communities, and municipalities that have passed an Urban Tree Canopy Goal Resolution.
This year’s grant cycle was highly competitive: 34 applicants requested a total of $125,000 in matched funding. Since 2000, more than $1.4 million has helped fund the planting of almost 9,500 trees throughout the First State, according to a recently-completed audit of the grant program as part of a research project in cooperation with Delaware State University. Overall tree survival over the entire period was almost 70 percent, and average annual tree survival was more than 90 percent.
In addition, the Delaware Forest Service also funded $10,799 in grants for tree planting projects within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, an effort to improve water quality by mitigating storm water run-off and reducing erosion and sedimentation.
