HARRINGTON – The Kent Conservation District recently received a Mid-Del Foundation grant in support of the annual Delaware Envirothon, an environmental education challenge sponsored by the Delaware Association of Conservation Districts (DACD), in which teams of Delaware high school students compete for scholarships and awards. DACD partners with DNREC’s Division of Watershed Stewardship, working with landowners and managers to implement agricultural and urban/suburban conservation plans.

The Kent Conservation District was among 29 local organizations receiving grants from the Mid-Del Foundation, the charitable arm for Harrington Raceway and Casino, at the foundation’s 17th annual grant luncheon on Nov. 12 in the casino’s gold room.

During the Delaware Envirothon, five-member teams test their practical knowledge and application of environmental science in the categories of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils/land-use, wildlife, air quality, and a current environmental issue, along with their public speaking skills. The state champion team goes on to represent Delaware in national competition. The Envirothon’s goals include:

  • Promoting environmental awareness and stewardship;
  • Developing students’ critical thinking, cooperative problem solving, and decision-making skills;
  • Presenting balanced options for management of our renewable and non-renewable natural resources; and
  • Providing awareness of and accessibility to resource organizations offering assistance in environmental issues.

For more information about the Delaware Envirothon, please visit www.delawareenvirothon.org or contact Rick Mickowski at 302-365-8979.

The Mid-Del Foundation supports organizations and activities involving agricultural, civic, and social needs in Delaware. Established to consolidate the charitable undertakings of Harrington Raceway, Inc., the Mid-Del Foundation has awarded nearly $1.4 million in grants since 2002.

Secretary of State Announces Medical License and Controlled Substance Privileges Suspension

DOVER – Secretary of State Jeffrey Bullock has suspended the Delaware medical license and controlled substance prescribing privileges of Ifeanyi Udezulu for repeatedly failing to adhere to state regulations for the safe prescribing of opioid medications.

In making this determination, Secretary Bullock considered a complaint filed by the Department of Justice, which alleged that Mr. Udezulu repeatedly prescribed opioid medications to patients without obtaining informed consent, discussing the risks associated with such medications, or conducting meaningful patient evaluations or examinations. The complaint further alleged that Mr. Udezulu ignored “red flags” that signaled misuse, abuse, or diversion of the medications he had prescribed.

The order suspending Mr. Udezulu’s medical license was signed by the secretary with the concurrence of the president of the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline. The secretary had sole authority to suspend Mr. Udezulu’s Controlled Substance Registration.

Delaware Code Title 24 enables a temporary suspension pending a hearing to be issued upon the written order of the Secretary of State, if the activity of the licensee presents a clear and immediate danger to public health, safety or welfare.

The suspension of Mr. Udezulu will remain in effect for a period of 60 days, during which time disciplinary hearings will be held or the final disposition for this individual will take place. As the result of a hearing, the Board of Medical Licensure and has the authority to impose disciplinary sanctions up to and including revocation of a practitioner’s license. The secretary has the authority to impose disciplinary sanctions up to and including revocation of the Controlled Substance Registration.

The licensure status of Mr. Udezulu has been updated on the Division of Professional Regulation’s online license verification service. Documentation related to this suspension also may be viewed at this site.

The Mezzanine Gallery to Exhibit “Ship of Theseus” by Lauren E. Peters

On view from December 7-28, 2018
Free opening reception on Friday, December 7 at 5 p.m.

Wilmington, Del. (November 28, 2018) – Ship of Theseus, an exhibition of self-portraits by painter Lauren E. Peters, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from December 7-28, 2018. Peters received a 2018 Individual Artist Fellowship in Painting. The artist will host a free opening reception on Friday, December 7 from 5-8 p.m.

Greek and Roman references and the understanding of self/identity have been recurring themes in Peters’ work. Her choice of the exhibition title, Ship of Theseus, is a reference to thought experiment that raises the question of whether a ship—standing for an object in general—that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. In her artwork, Peters explores the fluid and multifaceted nature of identity through a series of self-portraits in which she wears a variety of clothing and props. Peters’ colorful personas fill the foreground and they frequently gaze directly at the viewer.

While the costumes may be thought of as disguises, they are created to bring the different realities beneath our “normal” appearance to light. Peters explains:

“If I put on a costume for a self-portrait, is that more or less me? There are such a variety of changes that humans undergo over the course of a lifetime or even days; and these paintings, under the wigs and bright colors, struggle to find the truth at the core.”

The Mezzanine Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and  is located in the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.
