WILMINGTON, Del. – In recognition and memory of Senator Richard Cordrey’s service to the State of Delaware, Governor Carney has ordered the Delaware flag at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff until sunset on August 27, 2022.

Governor Carney also released the following statement:

“I was sad this week to learn of the passing of Senator Richard Cordrey – a one-of-a-kind leader in the Delaware General Assembly. Senator Cordrey is the longest serving Senate President Pro Temp in Delaware history, serving for 19 years. He was the ultimate southern Delaware gentleman who was well liked and respected by Delawareans across our state. He brought a certain grace to his work as a leader in the State Senate and as Finance Secretary for Governor Minner. His influence on Delaware’s economy – especially his efforts on financial stability – will have a lasting impact on our state. Senator Cordrey also used his experience as a Sussex County farmer to support Delaware agriculture and to bring a conservative approach to fiscal matters. The State of Delaware is in a stronger place because of his service. Senator Cordrey will be sorely missed.”

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of gun violence perpetrated on July 4, 2022, in Highland Park, Illinois, President Biden has ordered flags at all U.S. government buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff until sunset on July 9, 2022. 
 
In concurrence with the President’s order, Governor Carney has ordered both the U.S. and Delaware flags at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff until sunset on July 9, 2022. 

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on May 24, 2022, by a gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, President Biden ordered flags at all U.S. government buildings and facilities to be flown at half-staff until sunset on May 28, 2022. 

In concurrence with the President’s order, Governor Carney has ordered both the U.S. and Delaware flags at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff until sunset on May 28, 2022. 

Governor Carney’s Statement:

“So many across the country are feeling helpless and hopeless right now. A massacre of an elementary school classroom has come on the heels of a racist mass shooting in a grocery store. But elected officials — here in Delaware and across the country — are not helpless. The reality is we can do something about these horrific tragedies. In every state in the nation, and in Congress, we have the ability to pass legislation to make it harder and harder for people to get their hands on weapons that cause these mass murders. We have made progress here in Delaware, but it isn’t enough. I’m committed to working with the General Assembly to continue doing our part to prevent these shameful, appalling, unnecessary tragedies. In the meantime, my heart is with the victims and their families.”

On Thursday, President Biden ordered flags at all U.S. government buildings and facilities to be flown at half-staff until sunset on May 16, 2022 in memory of the more than 1 million Americans who have died from COVID-19.

In concurrence with the President’s order, Governor Carney has ordered both the U.S. and Delaware flags at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff until sunset on May 16, 2022, and issued the following statement:

“More than 1 million Americans have lost their lives to COVID-19, including 2,928 Delawareans. Each person had family and friends. And each one was a precious life. We are thinking about those individuals and all of the families and friends who lost loved ones to COVID. We will continue to remember, honor, and pray for them.”

Additionally, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15 in accordance with federal law (36 U.S.C. 136-137), we pay tribute to peace officers across our country who have died, or who have been disabled in the line of duty. Flags will already be lowered on May 15, 2022, and are to remain lowered until sunset on May 16, 2022.

As a mark of respect for the passing of Madeleine Korbel Albright, the first female U.S. Secretary of State, and in recognition of her tremendous life of service to this nation, President Biden has ordered that the U.S. flag be immediately flown at half-staff until sunset on March 27, 2022. In concurrence with the President’s order, Governor Carney has ordered both the U.S. and Delaware flags at state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff.
