Wreaths Across America Ceremonies: Monday, December 12th, 2016

When/Where: Monday, December 12th, 2016 beginning at 11:30am. Location is Legislative Hall, 411 Legislative Ave., Dover, DE 19901

We would like to invite everyone to the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony that’s being hosted again by the Delaware General Assembly. State House ceremonies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. are part of a week-long celebration of America’s veterans and their service to our country, with a particular focus on family during the holidays.

“This nationwide program is about remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms,” said event organizers. The originator of the wreath laying program was Morrill Worcester, owner of a wreath making company in Maine who in 1991 donated and delivered wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery to be placed on the graves of the fallen.

The WAA program’s mission of “Remember, Honor, Teach,” spreads the message of the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. A large wreath honoring all five branches of the armed forces will be placed at the base of the Delaware Continentals Statue. Additional wreaths will be laid on the grounds of Legislative Hall, at the Gulf War Memorial, the Dover Light Infantry Memorial, World War II Memorial and the Medal of Honor Memorial. The ceremony will include a volley and TAPS. –Lori Christiansen

(DOVER, Del.—Dec. 2, 2016)—Delaware’s historic Buena Vista mansion will be decked out for a one-day-only holiday open-house on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The open house, entitled “Land and Sea Christmas,” will feature decorations and children’s craft activities on the themes of the land and sea. Located at 661 S. Dupont Highway (Route 13), southwest of New Castle, Buena Vista is one of Delaware’s most historic homes. The main section of the house was built between 1845 and 1847 by John M. Clayton, United States secretary of state from 1849 to 1850 under presidents Taylor and Fillmore, and United States senator from 1829 to 1836, 1845 to 1849, and 1853 until his death in 1856. The home later became the residence of C. Douglass Buck, governor of Delaware from 1929 to 1937 and United States senator from 1942 to 1948. Buena Vista and its grounds were donated to the state by the Buck family in 1965 and now serve as a conference center administered by the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs.

Governor’s Weekly Message: Reducing Home Utility Expenses While Protecting the Environment

Wilmington, DE – In his weekly message, Governor Markell highlights Delaware’s Weatherization Assistance Program, which insulates and weather-proofs homes at no cost to reduce the financial burden for low-income households, improve home safety, and protect the environment.

“As temperatures drop, some Delawareans worry about utility bills that spike this time every year and their ability to keep their families warm during the winter season,” Governor Markell said. “Delawareans deserve a safe, healthy, and affordable place to call home, and the Weatherization Assistance Program is helping to make this a reality for more of our people, while supporting our economy and our environment. And that will keep Delaware moving forward.”

Please note: This year the Delaware Weatherization Assistance Program celebrates 40 years of serving low-income households, especially families with children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. The program has helped thousands of Delaware families, saving many participants 30 percent or more on their utility bills. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources Division of Energy and Climate has marked this milestone with an informational video that features personal testimonials from program participants and information about this valuable service. Delawareans are encouraged to view this video and to visit de.gov/wap to learn more about the program and its eligibility requirements.

Every week, the Governor’s office releases a new Weekly Message in video, audio, and transcript form. The message is available on:
