Governor’s Weekly Message: Empowering Delawareans through Financial Literacy

(Wilmington, DE) – In his weekly message, Governor Markell explains the importance of helping Delawareans understand and take control of their finances and highlights the success of Stand By Me, a statewide financial empowerment partnership program.

“Of the more than 3,000 Delawareans who have worked with a coach since 2011, 82 percent reviewed their credit for the first time, 50 percent worked on household budgets and added savings, and 76 percent took action to improve their credit,” said Governor Markell. “If we stop thinking of financial literacy as courses and brochures and start thinking about it as an essential service for the success of our employees and constituents, we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.”

Every week, the Governor’s office releases a new Weekly Message in video, audio, and transcript form. The message is available on:

Wilmington – State offices in New Castle County are operating on a 2 hour delay today. DelDOT crews again worked through the night treating the roads from the snow received last night and any icy spots caused by the fluctuating temperatures. Those roads may be slippery and drivers should proceed cautiously.

Governor Markell Announces Lifting of State of Emergency in New Castle County

Wilmington, DE – Governor Jack Markell announced he has lifted the State of Emergency with Level One Driving Warning for New Castle County, effective at 2 p.m. today. The State of Emergency with a Level 1 Driving Warning was lifted in Kent County at noon. Road conditions throughout the state have improved since this morning, but some roads still have snow and ice on them. Drivers should continue to exercise caution if they must travel. DelDOT will continue to plow and salt roads as necessary.

“Thousands of State workers have been working across Delaware throughout the duration of this event and we are incredibly grateful for their efforts,” said Governor Markell.  “Road conditions continue to improve, but motorists should continue to be careful, as snowy and icy spots still exist and additional snowfall is expected in the northern part of the state.”

An additional 1 – 3 inches is forecasted to fall sometime this evening in New Castle County. State officials will continue to monitor the weather and road conditions and will take any appropriate action, including possibly re-instituting a state of emergency if weather conditions require.
