DNREC’s Division of Watershed Stewardship invites public to Chapel Branch Nature Day for family fun and volunteer cleanup Saturday, Oct. 14 in Seaford

SEAFORD – The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Watershed Stewardship, along with the Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy and the Delaware Nature Society, invites the public to the Chapel Branch Nature Area for a day of outdoor activities from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. The nature area’s address is 492 Woodland Road, Seaford, DE 19973.

The Chapel Branch Nature Day is the final event in this year’s Reclaim Our River – Nanticoke Series, a program offering monthly events, workshops and recreational activities designed to raise water quality awareness in the Nanticoke Watershed.

The day will feature family fun activities, including nature walks with guides discussing native wildlife; hands-on exploring of the creek critters of Chapel Branch with the Delaware Nature Society; and demonstrations of how Delawareans can test water quality in the state’s waterways. The event will educate visitors on techniques used to improve water quality by reducing nutrient and sediment pollution entering Delaware’s waterways.

Meanwhile, local Boy Scouts and other volunteers will lend a hand to conservation at the nature area by cleaning up trash, working on invasive species removal, trail maintenance, and trail building. Additional volunteers are welcome to join the project for helping maintain the nature area. While some tools will be available, volunteers also are encouraged to bring clippers, shovels, saws, and wheelbarrows.

November 11th: Veterans Day Service

Veterans Day Service

Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 10:30am – The War Memorial Plaza/ DE Memorial Bridge – 163 Cherry Lane, New Castle, DE  19720

The Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs and the Disabled American Veterans are hosting this year’s Veterans Day Service. Please join us to pay tribute to all who have served and to all who are currently serving. (For more information, please contact the DCVA office at 302-739-2792)

What is a Veteran? A “VETERAN” -whether active duty, discharged, retired, reserve or guard- is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America,” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.”

It is a VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is a VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is a VETERAN, not a poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is a VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is a VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is a VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

Halloween-related programs at Lewes, Del.’s Zwaanendael Museum in October 2017

-“Who Did In the Delaware Ducks?” and “Mysteries of History” to be featured-

(DOVER, Del.—Oct. 11, 2017)—During October 2017, the Zwaanendael Museum, located at 102 Kings Highway in Lewes, Del., will present two Halloween-related programs.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 at 2 p.m., the museum will present the theatrical murder-mystery, “Who Did In the Delaware Ducks?” Created by Zwaanendael Museum staff, the play is based on an actual case that was recorded in the “Court Records of Sussex County, Del., 1677–1710.” In that case, from June 1687, Arthur Starr, a resident of Second St. in Lewes, discovered that two of his ducks had been deliberately killed. As part of the play, museum visitors will serve as detectives, meeting the alleged perpetrator and searching for clues to determine who committed this heinous crime. Guests of all ages will enjoy participating in this historical whodunit.

“Who Did In the Delaware Ducks?” will be presented outside on the museum’s grounds or, in case of inclement weather, inside on the museum’s 2nd floor (entry via staircase; no elevator). Admission is free but, due to space restrictions, reservations are required by calling 302-645-1148 no later than Oct. 20, 2017.

In the second program, “Mysteries of History,” historic-site-interpreter Beth Gott will lead walking tours that explore the unusual tombstones of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church graveyard in Lewes. Tours will depart from the Zwaanendael Museum on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Participation is free but, due to space restrictions, reservations for the tours are required by calling 302-645-1148 no later than Oct. 27, 2017.

The Zwaanendael Museum was built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the state’s first European colony, Swanendael, established by the Dutch along Hoorn Kill (present-day Lewes-Rehoboth Canal) in 1631. Designed by E. William Martin (architect of Legislative Hall and the Hall of Records in Dover), the museum is modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, and features a stepped facade gable with carved stonework and decorated shutters. The museum’s exhibits and presentations provide a showcase for Lewes-area maritime, military and social history.
