LEWES – On the eve of what many consider the biggest recreational fishing weekend of the year, DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife has confirmed a new state record in the Delaware Sport Fishing Tournament – a false albacore caught June 29 by a Pennsylvania angler from the fishing boat Get Bent in Masseys Canyon, about 35 miles offshore from Indian River Inlet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Tim Parrill of Wellsville, Pa., caught the record fish – which measured 30.75 inches long, had a 22-inch girth and weighed 20.5 pounds – with Capt. Steve Lednum at the helm of Get Bent. The false albacore was weighed at Hook ‘Em & Cook ‘Em in Rehoboth Beach and certified as a new state record by Lieutenant Casey Zolper of DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police.

The fish outweighed by a half-pound the previous state record 20-pound false albacore, caught in 2008 by Christian Anderson. A member of the tuna family, also known as “little tunny,” the false albacore is a popular game fish for its fight and run against an angler’s line. It is also the most plentiful of the tuna in the Atlantic Ocean and can make fine seafood when properly prepared.

Governor Markell Announces Recipients of the Sixth Annual Financial Literacy Education Fund Grant

Governor Markell announced that 17 Delaware nonprofit organizations will receive a total of $204,000 in grant money from the state’s Financial Literacy Education Fund (FLEF). These grant funds will be used to teach adults and children throughout Delaware the importance of saving money, maintaining a budget, borrowing responsibly. To make this announcement, Governor Markell was joined by State Bank Commissioner Robert Glen and members of the Financial Literacy Education Fund grant committee.

Governor Markell established the Financial Literacy Education Fund in 2009 when he signed Senate Bill 108 to require businesses that make short-term consumer loans (payday loans) and car title loans to pay a high-cost loan license fee surcharge of $1,500 annually for each licensed office. Those fees are deposited into the FLEF in order to fund grants to or contracts with schools or other organizations that provide financial literacy skills to adults and youth in Delaware.

Since the program began, over $2 million in FLEF grants have been awarded to over 26 organizations to provide financial education that empowers youth and adults in Delaware to make sound financial decisions for today, tomorrow and every day in their future. “These organizations continue to improve the financial knowledge of the citizens of Delaware by providing adults with the tools needed to succeed financially and by teaching our youth the importance of saving money and making good spending choices,” said Governor Markell.

The FLEF is administered by the Office of the State Bank Commissioner and the Secretary of State’s Office. Applications for the competitive grants were rated on how they would improve the financial literacy of Delawareans. All schools recognized by the Delaware Department of Education and nonprofit organizations within the State of Delaware that have 501(c)(3) designation by the Internal Revenue Service were eligible to apply. The Fund has one competitive grant cycle per calendar year.

Governor’s Weekly Message: Expanding Access to High-Quality Early Learning Programs

Wilmington, DE – In his weekly message, Governor Markell highlights the efforts of the state to give all Delaware families access to high-quality early learning programs.

“The first few years of a child’s life are crucial to his or her success. That’s why one of our top goals has been giving all Delaware families access to high-quality early learning programs and why I made early childhood funding one of my top budget priorities this year,” Governor Markell said. “These efforts show how Delaware and the Obama Administration’s historic investments in early learning can make immediate and lasting change in the lives of our children. By continuing to live up to those commitments, we’ll create bright futures for our kids, and we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.”

Every week, the Governor’s office releases a new Weekly Message in video, audio, and transcript form. The message is available on:

Building and Sustaining a Stronger, More Prosperous Delaware: Strengthening Our Economy

Dover, DE – Earlier this month, the Governor’s office began releasing a series of videos highlighting the progress the state has made over the past eight years through the voices of Delawareans. They will address ways in which the lives of Delawareans today, and in generations to come, are affected by efforts to strengthen our schools, develop cleaner and more efficient energy, make the state a safer and more welcoming place for all people, improve recreational and cultural options, and create more economic development and opportunity.

The video below addresses the progress of the state’s economy and how Delaware’s business climate encourages companies to locate and expand in Delaware. These results have happened as the state has pursued an approach of working with private, public and non-profit partners to support innovative technology, workforce development, and job-creating capital investment.

By the end of Governor Markell’s first year in office, Delaware’s unemployment rate was climbing toward ten percent and five percent of the state’s jobs were gone. In 2010, Gallup ranked Delaware 45th in its annual job creation index. Today, however, Gallup ranks Delaware fourth. Our unemployment rate has fallen drastically to 4.1 percent, while employment gains have been the largest for any two consecutive years in the state’s history. Since Markell took office, the labor force participation rate has grown by 1.4 percentage points—the second highest rate in the nation.

In today’s economy, businesses can hire, locate and expand anywhere in the world, and because of the diligent efforts of the state and its partners, and the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of Delawareans, the state is now one of the nation’s leaders in job growth, outpacing the regional and national rates.

Excerpts from the video:
“I think it’s in the DNA of a very small state to prioritize the interests of very small companies,” Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewery said. “The way Dogfish is a David in the world of Goliaths—the multi-national conglomerates that dominate the beer world—to some extent Delaware is a David in a world of Goliaths when you look at the giant states that are out there.”

“I heard about project pop-up via Facebook, and it was really great to see something like that happening in Delaware,” Amber Shader, owner of First & Little and Amber Shader Photography said. “As soon as I saw it I really jumped at the opportunity to be able to have three months out there where you can have a safety net and test out your business.”

“We just can’t believe the can-do attitude we received from here, the immediate responses to any of the questions or issues we had,” Dermot Brady, CEO of AB Group Packaging said. “All I can say is if anyone wants to choose the right state, choose Delaware—biggest secret in the USA.”

The video series will be released via email as well as on the Governor’s YouTube channel. This week’s video is available on:
