THE MEZZANINE GALLERY TO EXHIBIT RHYTHMIC CHAOS BY SUSAN BENARCIK

The Delaware Division of the Arts Mezzanine Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper and small sculptures by Susan Benarcik during the month of March.  Rhythmic Chaos will be on view from March 4-24, with an opening reception on Friday, March 4 from 5-7 p.m.

Benarcik, a sculptor and printmaker, is inspired by the rhythm, harmony, chaos and balance in the patterns and shapes designed by nature. Rather than recreating the work of nature, she borrows forms from nature and transforms ordinary materials into dimensional sculpture and patterns that possess a balance of symmetry, imperfection, and consistent ‘otherness’. Benarcik’s love of horticulture and design inform a series of botanical drawings of fictitious plants that are also included in the show.

The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington. The Gallery schedule of upcoming artists through August 2016 is now available on our website.

Wilmington, DE – In his weekly message, Governor Markell highlights an initiative announced during his State of the State address to increase access to high-quality reproductive healthcare for women in an effort to improve opportunities for women and children.

“Expanding opportunity for our people means ensuring that all Delawareans can maximize control over their own destinies, and over the destinies of their families. To do so, we must address our state’s high-rate of unplanned pregnancies,” Gov. Markell said. “By increasing access to high-quality reproductive healthcare, we can improve opportunities for women and their children —and that, will keep Delaware moving forward.”

Transcript of the Governor’s Weekly Message: Increasing Access to Healthcare to Expand Opportunity for All Delawareans

Dover DE – The deadline to change political party affiliation before the Presidential Primary is Friday, February 28, 2020.

Only voters registered as Democrats and Republicans can vote in their respective Party’s Presidential Primary. The deadline for registered voters to change political party affiliations before the 2016 Presidential Primary Election is Friday, February 26, 2016.  People who are not-registered to vote in Delaware who want to vote in Delaware’s Presidential Primary have until April 2nd to register.

The Department’s iVote System is designed as a full-service voter information portal, which permits Delaware residents to access a full range of voter registration services, and to obtain any information needed to participate in the elections process. Citizens can use IVote to change their political party affiliation, change their name, change their address and register to vote.

“We have worked very hard to make iVote a ‘one stop shop’ for Delaware’s voters,” said Elaine Manlove, State Election Commissioner.  “We are proud to offer a wide range of services and information to voters, which they can access whenever convenient for them,” added Manlove.

HANNAH STURGIS TO REPRESENT DELAWARE IN 2016 POETRY OUT LOUD NATIONAL FINALS IN WASHINGTON, DC

From a competitive field of more than eighteen Delaware high schools students, Hannah Sturgis, a junior from POLYTECH High School, earned the title of 2016 Poetry Out Loud Delaware State Champion at the state finals held in Smyrna, Delaware, on February 23. The first runner-up was Brandon Dawson from Middletown High School, and the second runner-up was Jordan McMillan from Sanford School.

Hannah Sturgis’s final recitation, Infelix by Adah Isaacs Menken, earned her high marks with the judges. The full poem can be found on the Poetry Foundation’s website.

For her winning presentation, Hannah Sturgis will receive $200 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, with a chaperone to compete at the national championship from May 2-4, 2016. POLYTECH High School will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. Brandon Dawson, the first runner-up will receive $100, and Middletown High School will receive $200 towards the purchase of poetry books.

The Poetry Out Loud state competition, sponsored by the Delaware Division of the Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.

Competition begins at the classroom level in the fall and culminates with the state finals each spring. “One of the ways we have worked to improve public safety and create opportunity for all Delawareans is through a smarter criminal justice system – a system that reserves limited prison space for violent criminals and emphasizes treatment and community supervision for low-level offenders whose needs outweigh their risks to the community,” Gov. Markell said. “Together, these programs provide a range of services that simply aren’t available in prison and they show the potential to reduce recidivism and to transform lives for the better. And that will keep Delaware moving forward.”
