(DOVER, Del. — Dec. 4, 2020) — During the week of Nov. 30, 2020, the Rehoboth-Beach-based Sussex Gardeners completed the installation of outdoor and indoor holiday decorations at the Zwaanendael Museum, located at 102 Kings Highway in Lewes, Del. Based on the theme, “Lighting the Way,” this year’s decorations utilize plant material and holiday objects to illustrate various sources of light including lanterns, lightships, lighthouses, starlight and luminarias. The museum’s decorations are presented in conjunction with Lewes Lights, a community event in which the city’s residents decorate their home exteriors for the holiday season.

Founded in 1937 as the Nassau Garden Committee, the 50-plus-member Sussex Gardeners brings together members of the community who have an interest in the fine art of gardening, landscape design, floral design and horticulture. The group’s community outreach includes programs in garden therapy, conservation and civic beautification.

The Zwaanendael Museum was built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the state’s first European colony, Swanendael, established by the Dutch along Hoorn Kill (present-day Lewes-Rehoboth Canal) in 1631. Designed by E. William Martin (architect of Legislative Hall and the Hall of Records in Dover), the museum is modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, and features a stepped facade gable with carved stonework and decorated shutters.

Museum exhibits and presentations provide a showcase for Lewes-area maritime, military and social history. Current exhibits include “Delaware Railroads: Elegant Travel and Timely Transport” which explores the history of rail travel and transport in the First State; and “A Seaborne Citizenry: The DeBraak and Its Atlantic World” which tells the story of His Majesty’s Sloop of War DeBraak, a British warship that sank off the Delaware coast on May 25, 1798.

The Zwaanendael Museum is open for free, 45-minute tours by reservation only from Wednesday through Saturday at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. For additional information about visiting the museum, go to https://history.delaware.gov/p1-reopening-info or call 302-645-1148.

The Zwaanendael Museum is administered by the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, an agency of the State of Delaware. Primary funding for division programs and services is provided by annual appropriations from the Delaware General Assembly and grants from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, a federal agency. For arts programming and projects taking place during
fiscal year 2022 (September 2021 – August 2022)

Wilmington, Del. (December 1, 2020) – The Delaware Division of the Arts has opened its annual online application process for grants for arts programming and projects taking place during fiscal year 2022 (September 2021 – August 2022). Applications will be submitted through the smARTDE online system and are due by 4:30 p.m. EST on Monday, March 1, 2021.

The guidelines for all grant programs are available online at arts.delaware.gov/grant-overview/. Past and new applicants should read the guidelines carefully and call Division staff with any questions. A list of the Division staff members who manage the grants process, including their responsibilities and contact information, is available at the end of this release.

Below are all of the Division’s grants programs and their respective deadlines. Please visit arts.delaware.gov/grant-overview/ to access the full guidelines for each program and a description of the grant review process. Some organizational grants are available throughout the year on a rolling deadline basis.

Grants for Delaware Arts Organizations:

General Operating Support (GOS) – support of annual operating expenses to ensure that year-round participation in the arts is available to the people of Delaware. This grant category utilizes a three-year application cycle. Full applications are due every three years, with Interim Applications due in the “off” years. Annual March 1 deadline.

Arts Stabilization Fund (ASF) – support for improvements to facilities owned (or under long-term lease) and operated by the organization. ASF grants are funded through the Division’s participation in the Arts Consortium of Delaware, Inc. (ArtCo) endowment. Annual March 1 deadline.

Education Resource (EDR) – grants to strengthen standards-based arts education projects, programs, and activities that utilize the arts education resources of the Delaware arts community or strengthen arts organizations’ capacity to serve as professional development resources for teaching artists and educators. Annual March 1 deadline.

StartUp – financial support, training and consultation to develop and strengthen their management capacity of emerging arts organizations so that they can operate in a sustainable manner. Completion of the StartUp program is a prerequisite for emerging organizations seeking General Operating Support. Letter of intent due January 15. Annual March 1 deadline.

Arts Access – provides up to $1,000 to support the presentation of performing, visual, literary, media, or folk arts in communities throughout the state. Rolling deadline.

Grants for Delaware Community-Based Organizations (CBOs):

Project Support – support of arts programs provided by CBOs that assist in the growth of a vibrant cultural environment by encouraging the continued development of arts activities in communities throughout the state. College and university projects must be non-credit and serve the general community. Annual March 1 deadline.

Arts Access – provide up to $1,000 to support the presentation of performing, visual, literary, media, or folk arts in communities throughout the state. Rolling deadline.

Grants for Delaware Schools and School Districts:

Note: Due to COVID-19 restrictions for Delaware schools during the 2020-2021 school year, artist residency applications will be accepted for virtual learning projects only. TranspARTation grants will not be available this year.

Artist Residency – grants for residencies with visual, literary, performing or media artists working with students in the classroom or in professional development workshops with teachers. Rolling deadline.

Education Resource (EDR) – grants to strengthen standards-based arts education projects, programs, and activities that utilize the arts education resources of the Delaware arts community or strengthen arts organizations’ capacity to serve as professional development resources for teaching artists and educators. Annual March 1 deadline.

TranspARTation – grants that support transportation costs for schools to travel to Delaware arts and cultural institutions and venues in order for students to attend arts performances, events and exhibits. Not available this year.

Grants for Delaware Individual Artists:

Artist Fellowship – support of individual artists in their work as visual, performing, media, folk, and/or literary artists. Download the smARTDE Instructions to learn how to log in and navigate within the new system. Application opens Spring 2021. August 2 deadline.

Artist Opportunity Grant – support of individual artists with unique professional and artistic development or presentation opportunities. Quarterly deadlines.

State agencies encourage COVID-19 testing

WILMINGTON, Del. – Governor John Carney, the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH), and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) announced the list of community testing sites throughout Delaware next week. Testing locations listed below include pop-up and Curative trailer sites, as well as community sites hosted by New Castle County, St. Francis, Henrietta Johnson Medical Center.

“We are seeing an increase in positive COVID-19 cases here and Delaware and across the country,” said Governor Carney. “We are less than two weeks away from Thanksgiving. It’s important you reconsider hosting in-person gatherings with people outside your immediate household. It’s also critical we continue to practice the basic public health measures that we know work to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Avoid gatherings with those outside your household. Keep wearing a mask in public. Wash or sanitize your hands frequently. Please consider getting a free test—whether you have symptoms or not. Testing for COVID-19 is the best way to track the spread of this virus and contain potential outbreaks.”

DEMA has coordinated community sites this week in addition to permanent testing sites at Walgreens and at various hospitals and health care locations. Delawareans can view a full list of COVID-19 testing locations and reserve a spot at de.gov/gettested. Site details will be added this weekend.

Delawareans are encouraged to check the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services’ social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for testing location updates due to inclement weather.

Wilmington, Del. (November 2, 2020) –Pours: Feelings of an Almost Human Nature, an exhibition of works on paper by Kim Klabe, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from November 6, 2020 through January 8, 2021. A free opening reception will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020 from 5-7 p.m.

After years of painting traditional representational scenes in acrylic and watercolor, Klabe turned to beer and wine to create spontaneous artwork she calls “pours.” The artist pours wine or dark beer onto thick watercolor paper and manipulates the paper to move the liquid. After the liquid dries, Klabe finds shapes in the dried stain like one might identify shapes in the clouds. She then defines those shapes and completes the images with markers and colored pencil. This technique leads to images that invite viewers to look closer, reflect, and often laugh.

Klabe explains, “I love the way the wine and beer move across the textured paper – their color, the way they puddle and leave shimmery sugars behind. I love how wine and beer can bring people together for laughs and conversation. This medium is unique and unusual and has helped me connect with my true love for art and expression.”

This show features “pours” that are inspired by music that has meant something to Klabe over the years. Her musical inspirations range from her first two albums (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John and Young Americans by David Bowie) played on a turntable to the music that guided her through high school, college, divorce, and other impactful times in her life. She names the pours to reflect either the title of a song or album or selected lyrics. Artwork inspired by music from The Police, Counting Crows, and Pink Floyd will be on view.

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is reminding interested businesses that applications for the next round of Transportation Infrastructure Investment Fund (TIIF) grants will be accepted until Monday, November 16, 2020. A total of $12,501,000 is available for the second round of TIIF applications.

TIIF was established in 2019 to provide economic assistance for renovation, construction, or any other type of improvements to roads and related transportation infrastructure in order to attract new businesses to the state, or expand existing businesses in the state, when such an economic development opportunity would create a significant number of direct, permanent, quality full-time jobs.

The council’s first recommendations were made in June 2020, and seven projects totaling more than $7 million in grants were approved by Secretary Cohan and Secretary of State Jeff Bullock.

The members of the TIIF Council appointed by Governor Carney are Rob Book, Martin Nunlee, Cornelia Johnson, Mona Parikh, John Riley, Bill Strickland, and Joe Westcott, who serves as chair.  Representative Bill Bush and Senator David Sokola were appointed by their respective chambers to represent the General Assembly on the council.
