Winter Storm Warning

The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is prepared for the winter storm predicted to begin tonight through Thursday. DelDOT’s officials will continue to monitor the most current weather forecasts and dispatch crews. Motorists can anticipate rain, snow and/or sleet today. This evening from 6 PM until 2 AM on Thursday, there’s a chance of heavy mixed precipitation with reductions in visibility and high wind gusts.

Motorists can expect deteriorating road conditions throughout the day on Wednesday.

UPDATE: Governor Carney to Lift Level I Driving Warning at 5:00 p.m.

UPDATE: Governor Carney has lifted the Level I Driving Warning for New Castle County, effective at 5:00 p.m.

“While we continue to encourage motorists to use caution, we are able to lift the driving restriction with conditions improving countywide,” said Governor Carney. “Thank you to Delawareans for their caution throughout the storm, and to DelDOT crews for their quick work to clean up our roadways.”


Governor Carney Issues Level 1 Driving Warning for New Castle County Beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Driving Warning begins at 2:00 p.m., motorists to exercise extra caution

WILMINGTON, Del. – With snowfall intensifying, Governor Carney has issued a Level 1 Driving Warning for New Castle County beginning at 2:00 p.m.

A Level 1 Driving Warning means:

• Any person operating a motor vehicle shall exercise extra caution in the operation of their motor vehicle.
• Motorists are encouraged not to operate a motor vehicle on the State’s roadways unless there is a significant safety, health, or business reason to do so.

“Conditions are worsening across New Castle County, and we encourage everyone to stay off the roads if possible. If Delawareans have to be on the roadways, they should exercise extra caution while driving,” said Governor Carney. “DelDOT will continue to work throughout this afternoon and tonight to clear the roads.”

UPDATE: Governor Carney Terminates State of Emergency in Sussex County

WILMINGTON, Del. – Governor John Carney has terminated the State of Emergency in Sussex County. Governor Carney urges drivers to continue exercising caution on roadways.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect across Delaware until 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

Delaware continues to experience the coldest temperatures of the winter, and many Code Purple shelters in the state will be open during the weekend.

Jan. 5: State offices closed in Sussex until 4:30 p.m., employees are to report for 4:30 p.m. shifts

State of Delaware – Severe Weather Conditions & Emergencies (SWCE) Alert

State of Delaware offices in Sussex County will remain closed through 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018. Non-essential employees who live or work in Sussex County are not to report to work for this period. Non-essential employees who work other shifts are to report at 4:30 p.m. or scheduled work time whichever is later. Essential employees are to report as scheduled.

State of Delaware offices in Kent and New Castle Counties will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018. Non-essential employees who live or work in Kent and New Castle Counties do not report until 10 a.m. Essential employees are to report as scheduled.


DelDOT Winter Storm Update #5

Governor John Carney has terminated the Level 2 Driving Restriction in Sussex County, effective at 12:00 p.m. The State of Emergency will remain in effect in Sussex County until further notice to allow the Delaware National Guard to continue assisting local and state authorities with response to the winter storm.

While the Level 2 Driving Restriction will no longer be in place, DelDOT advises all motorists that there will still be snow covered secondary roads with significant drifting and subdivisions will likely not see plows until Saturday.

Road Conditions Update:
Icy conditions will remain throughout the weekend due the extreme cold, and motorists should also be alert for drifting snow on roadways statewide.

In Sussex County, DelDOT has brought additional plows from northern Delaware, and contractual plow operators are also assisting in the snow clearing effort.

DelDOT will continue to provide regular updates throughout the duration of the storm event.
