Middle and High School Students Invited to Compete in Digital Mapping Technology Contest

The Delaware Department of Education, in conjunction with the state’s geospatial education community, invites Delaware middle and high school students to enter Esri’s 2024 ArcGIS webapp competition. Students are challenged to create and share interactive mapping projects using ESRI ArcGIS software. Delaware entrants to this national competition must create a digital Storymap that explores some aspect of life in Delaware.

The competition is open to high school (grades 9-12) and middle school (grades 5-8) students. Assistance is available to teachers and students who have limited knowledge of how to create an ArcGIS Storymap or web app. Delaware’s top five middle and top five high school students each will be awarded a $100 prize. The state also will select one middle school and one high school entrant to compete nationally.

“Each year students wow me with their entries,” Secretary of Education Mark Holodick said. “This is a great opportunity for students to have fun while practicing real world skills.”

The competition closes May 3, 2024.

Secretary of Education Mark Holodick today honored the Delaware winners of the Esri’s 2023 ArcGIS US School Competition.

The Delaware Department of Education, in conjunction with the state’s geospatial education community, encourages Delaware middle and high school students to join Esri’s 2023 ArcGIS webapp competition. Students are challenged to create and share interactive mapping projects using ESRI ArcGIS software. Delaware entrants to this national competition must create a digital map or Story map that highlights facts and features unique to Delaware.

Esri’s 2023 ArcGIS School Competition is open to high school (grades 9-12) and middle school (grades 5-8) students in the United States. Assistance is available to teachers and students who have limited knowledge of how to create an ArcGIS Story map or web app. Delaware’s top five middle and top five high school students each will be awarded a $100 cash prize. The state also will select one middle school and one high school entrant to compete nationally. Winners at the national level each will earn a trip to the 2023 Esri Education Summit in San Diego, CA.

“I loved meeting with last year’s winners and learning about their projects. They were excited about what they learned and the chance they had to practice real-world skills,” Secretary of Education Mark Holodick said.

Middle and High School Students Win Digital Mapping Awards

Six students took home $100 prizes each as Delaware’s winners of the Esri’s 2022 ArcGIS US School Competition.

Secretary of Education Mark Holodick congratulated the winners in an recognition event in Dover Thursday afternoon.

The winners with links to their projects are:

  • Eric Lewis, a seventh grade home school student (1st place for middle school competition)
  • Natalie Lewis, a sophomore at Caesar Rodney High School (1st place for high school competition)
  • Alejandro Lobo, a senior at Newark High School (2nd place for high school competition)
  • Wendy Santana Medina, a junior at Newark High School  (3rd place for high school competition)
  • Mariam Samake, a junior at Newark High School (Honorable mention)
  • Naina Sharma, a senior at Newark High School (Honorable mention)

Eric Lewis and Natalie Lewis also represented Delaware in the national competition, where Natalie received recognition.

Secretary of Education Susan Bunting congratulated Delaware’s winners of the Esri’s 2021 ArcGIS US School Competition this afternoon, three siblings who each won $100 in prize money from ESRI.
