Governor Carney and Officials Break Ground on New Milford Interchange

Governor John Carney, U.S. Senator Tom Carper, U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, Transportation Secretary Jennifer Cohan, and a host of other dignitaries participated in a Department of Transportation (DelDOT) groundbreaking on Monday for the SR 1, Northeast Front Street Grade Separated Intersection project. The construction is anticipated to be complete by summer 2020.

“Working together with state legislators, we are investing more than $115 million in needed infrastructure projects across Kent County this year, including the one we’re celebrating today,” said Governor John Carney. “As a result, this project will improve safety for all those who live and travel through the Milford area by eliminating yet another dangerous crossover along Route 1.”

“With projects in Little Heaven and South Frederica which will be completed this year along Route 1, I am excited to see us move forward with our next grade separated interchange project in Milford,” said Secretary of Transportation Jennifer Cohan. “These projects not only will improve safety, but the quality of life for all those who live and work in the area.”

“This is a smart highway project that leverages state and federal dollars to make safety improvements, and improve the economic viability of this part of Milford,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper. “Last week, Congress passed a spending bill that will increase funding for roads, transit, rail, and other critical infrastructure. That includes eight and a half million dollars that will come to DelDOT this year, in addition to many more millions of dollars that our state can compete for in TIGER and transit grant programs. If we want to stay competitive and grow our economy, we must continue to invest in infrastructure.”

U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester said, “Through continued investments in smart infrastructure, Delaware is utilizing state-of-the-art technology to expedite road construction projects, minimize the burden on taxpayers, and improve road safety for citizens and tourists traveling through the state. By improving the intersection at Northeast Front Street and State Route 1 in Milford, we are taking meaningful steps toward making our roads safer and reducing traffic for Delaware families. That’s why I am proud to stand with Governor John Carney and Transportation Secretary Jennifer Cohan in breaking ground on this critically important project.”

This project aims to create a grade separated intersection at Northeast Front Street and SR 1 by elevating Northeast Front Street to cross above SR 1. Additionally, a connector road will be constructed between Northeast 10th Street and Northeast Front Street to eliminate the at-grade crossover, and redirect traffic to the proposed grade separation.

In conjunction with the corridor capacity preservation study for SR 1, a grade separated intersection at Northeast Front Street and SR 1 is needed to preserve both highway operational capacity and safety.

The contractor for this project is Diamond Materials LLC of Newport, Delaware. The contractor submitted a bid of $12,560,714.22, the lowest of seven bids received.
