The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is excited to announce the DMV on the Go trailer will kick off its third season on Monday, April 1, 2024.

This season’s schedule will differ slightly from last year. Instead of appearing in Wilmington on Tuesdays, the trailer will head south to the CHEER Center in Milton. The Georgetown DMV is becoming our busiest DMV location in the state and having the DMV on the Go in three Sussex locations will help us better serve our customers.

“Mobility is one of the DMV on the Go’s greatest assets,” shared Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Nicole Majeski. “It allows us to adjust our location based on usage and performance ensuring we are serving our customers to the best of our abilities,” continued Majeski.

“The DMV on the Go’s popularity, especially in Sussex County continues to grow,” said Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles Director Amy Anthony. “Customers really appreciate its accessibility, reduced wait times, and the multitude of services we can offer from a 45’ trailer. The feedback from our first two seasons has been overwhelmingly positive and we can’t wait to kick off our third,” assured Anthony.

The DMV on the Go trailer, featuring four fully functional workstations, made its debut in April of 2021. It’s ADA- accessible. It comes complete with an awning for bad weather and a wheelchair lift, and it performs all transactions as a traditional DMV except for inspections and road exams. Customers in need of uninsured motorist or in-person driver improvement assistance still need to visit the Wilmington, Delaware City, Dover, or Georgetown DMV location.

Last year, the DMV on the Go trailer assisted over 1,600 customers by allowing them to renew their registrations, driver licenses, complete title work, and more right in their neighborhood.

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announces effective October 11, 2023, active duty military and their dependents may qualify for a document fee exemption.

2 Del. Admin. C. §2266 was amended to assist with the transition to a new state less strenuous on our active duty military personnel and their dependents, who are deployed to the State of Delaware.

The exemption includes the registration of a motor vehicle by a member of the military (active, reserve, or National Guard) and their dependent family members who are stationed on either a temporary or permanent basis within the State of Delaware whose vehicles are registered in their state of residence or at their previous duty assignment (to include an overseas assignment). Military members or their dependent family members must provide active duty military orders indicating a temporary or permanent change of duty station within 90 days of relocating to Delaware or within 90 days of the vehicle purchase.

“Active duty military personnel and their families often relocate multiple times during their careers in the armed forces,” Senator Eric Buckson (R-Dover) said. “Figuring out new and innovative ways to assist these individuals to more easily transition to life in Delaware is important. I applaud the Department of Transportation and Division of Motor Vehicles for recognizing this challenge and meeting it head-on.”

“Our active duty military are no strangers to relocation, adapting to new surroundings and environments. Waiving the document fee is one small thing we can do to help ease their transition,” said Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Nicole Majeski.

“The process to request an exemption is quite easy,” added Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles Amy Anthony. “As soon as you get settled, bring your active duty military orders to one of our DMV locations. If you have a family member who qualifies, they must also be listed on the orders.”

The Military Document Fee Credit should be applied at the time of titling.

The DMV also offers various services for our Veterans including a Veteran’s Indicator that can be added to any driver license or identification card. DMV’s Heroes of the Highway program assists recently discharged military members with obtaining their Commercial Driver License.

Governor John Carney has proclaimed May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) along with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) encourages motorcyclists to ride smart and ride safely through education and awareness.

Every year from April through November, DMV offers six motorcycle safety courses for various skill levels, including an instructor-level course for those interested in becoming a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoach.

Course benefits include professional training and up to 15% off your motorcycle liability insurance. Plus, upon course completion graduates are exempt from taking DMV motorcycle endorsement knowledge and road testing for up to six months.

Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski commented, “Motorcyclists are much more vulnerable to crashes, and as motorists, we need to be extra cautious, especially during warmer weather, and remember to share the road.”

“Our motorcycle safety courses teach riders so many skills, but the ultimate goal is for graduates to utilize everything they learn every time they go out for a ride. By working together, we can make our roadways safer for all,” said DMV Director Jana Simpler.

Anyone who successfully completes a DMV Rider Safety Course in 2023 will be automatically entered to win a four-digit motorcycle license plate. Two drawings will be held: one on July 21, 2023, for those who successfully complete a course from March 17, 2023 to July 16, 2023, and another on November 18, 2023, for those who successfully complete a course from July 17, 2023, through November 12, 2023. Winners will receive an email alerting them how to obtain their tag.

Governor John Carney, U.S. Senator Tom Carper, U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester and state and local officials from Newark joined Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski on Monday for a groundbreaking event to mark the start of the I-95/896 interchange improvements project.

“There’s nothing more important that keeping Delaware drivers safe. Since this interchange first opened 60 years ago, we have seen continued growth along the Route 896 corridor and the resulting higher traffic volumes that come with it. Modernizing this interchange will improve safety for the thousands of people who travel through this area every day,” said Governor John Carney.

“This is a great example of the kind of investments we can make here in the First State and across the nation when we invest in our infrastructure,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper, chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee. “Investments like the one we made right here, thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which I was proud to lead to passage in the Senate, helps the flow of goods, and allows traffic to run more efficiently and safely. Ultimately, we are working to create jobs and make Delaware an attractive place to live and work.”

“Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction aimed to make Route 896 safer and stronger so that it can continue to support those who utilize it for life, work, and travel,” said Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester. “I’m proud that half of the funding for this project is coming from federal funds – a testament to our commitment to investing in our transportation infrastructure across the state. But today isn’t just about investing in Route 896, it’s also about investing in the jobs and innovation that Route 896 connects us to through Newark-based businesses and the University of Delaware.”

Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski added, “There have been more than 700 crashes at this interchange since 2019 due to congestion and the current configuration. This project is necessary in order to greatly reduce these incidents that cause serious injuries or worse. We appreciate the input we received throughout the planning process from residents and the business community to develop a project that accomplishes our goal of minimizing crashes and keeping traffic moving.”

The construction project includes reconfiguration of existing interchange ramps, widening of I-95 northbound and southbound, widening and rehabilitation of existing bridges on I-95 and SR 896, and construction of new bridges, retaining walls, sign structures, and lighting. A separated path will also span the interchange providing a connection for bicycle and foot traffic from Newark to Glasgow.
