Governor’s Weekly Message: Addressing Threats Of A Changing Climate

Wilmington, DE – In his weekly message, Governor Markell previews the release of the state’s Climate Action Progress Report, which reflects the state’s progress in addressing the threats of climate change in response to his Executive Order 41, which called for continuing Delaware’s national leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing strategies to improve the resiliency of the state’s infrastructure, and ensuring all state agencies incorporate measures for adapting to the impacts of climate change.

“We’ve taken important steps to address this challenge by cutting greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, while investing in renewable energy, and we’re making our low-lying state more resilient through projects like dike and beach restorations up and down our coastline. This progress must continue,” said Governor Markell. “In the coming days we’ll release our Climate Action Progress Report on how we’re doing. It shows that we’ve invested in vehicles that use cleaner fuels, strengthened our infrastructure, and increased energy efficiency. Together, we can continue to prepare for and mitigate the effects of climate change, supporting Delawareans’ health and safety, promoting economic opportunity, and addressing one of the greatest threats to the future of our state, our nation, and our planet. And that will keep Delaware moving forward.”

Governor’s Weekly Message: Improving Public Safety by Breaking the Cycle of Recidivism

Wilmington, DE – In a guest weekly message, Department of Correction Commissioner Robert Coupe highlights the Markell Administration’s efforts to give offenders a better chance of successfully reentering the community after their release from incarceration. By reducing the barriers to reentry, these initiatives are aimed at lowering the rate of recidivism and improving public safety.

“At the Department of Correction, we’re focused on keeping the public safe by providing effective supervision to individuals whose behavior has brought them into contact with our criminal justice system,” Commissioner Coupe said. “And we’re taking new steps to give these individuals a better chance of turning the page on their past and building new, productive, and law abiding lives. Together, these efforts are giving individuals a better chance to achieve personal success and break the cycle of recidivism. And that will keep Delaware moving forward.”

Governor’s Weekly Message: Expanding Pathways to Career Success for Delaware Students

Wilmington, DE – In his weekly message, Governor Markell discusses the significant and growing impact of Delaware’s Pathways to Prosperity initiative in creating opportunities for students to graduate high school with the skills, education, and opportunity to achieve career success in fast growing industries.

“Delawareans and all Americans face a changing global economy, one where employers can increasingly move anywhere in the world to find talent and, because of technology, they produce more with fewer employees,” Governor Markell said. “The most effective thing that our state can do to increase opportunity and prosperity is to ensure everyone has the skills to compete for good jobs. That requires bringing together our K-12 schools, our colleges and universities, and our business community to create a pipeline for success. It’s the reason I was so excited about our announcement at A.I. du Pont High School this past week, when we awarded nearly half a million dollars in grants to 16 high schools to expand our Pathways to Prosperity initiative. By continuing to expand this program so every student has the chance to participate, we’ll create more opportunities for them; we’ll support economic growth, and we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.”
