Holiday programs at Lewes, Del.’s Zwaanendael Museum on Dec. 4 and 6, 2014

(DOVER, Del.—Nov. 26, 2014)—Lewes, Del.’s Zwaanendael Museum will celebrate the winter-holiday season with the programs “Hospitality Night,” which will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m., and “Tour Zwaanendael Museum” which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Presented in partnership with the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, “Hospitality Night” will include a 1920s holiday-themed program featuring festive décor, music, demonstrations and seasonal refreshments. The second program, “Tour Zwaanendael Museum,” held in conjunction with the Lewes Historical Society’s Christmas Tour of Lewes, will provide visitors with an opportunity to explore this historic museum which showcases the Lewes-area’s maritime, military and social history.

The Zwaanendael Museum was built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the state’s first European colony, Swanendael, established by the Dutch along Hoorn Kill (present-day Lewes-Rehoboth Canal) in 1631. Designed by E. William Martin (architect of Legislative Hall and the Hall of Records in Dover), the museum is modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, and features a stepped facade gable with carved stonework and decorated shutters. The museum’s exhibits and presentations provide a showcase for Lewes-area maritime, military and social history.

Following is a long-term schedule of Zwaanendael-Museum-sponsored activities. Unless otherwise noted, all programs take place at the Zwaanendael Museum located at 102 Kings Highway in Lewes, Del. Museum hours from Nov. 1 to March 31 are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. From April 1 to Oct. 31, museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free for all events listed. Winter-holiday-themed events among the 15 special programs at Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs sites in December 2014

(DOVER, Del.—Nov. 18, 2014)—During the month of December 2014, the museums and historic properties administered by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs will be offering 15 special programs including eight winter-holiday-themed activities. Highlights of the month include “Nutcracker Storytime,” a glimpse into the story and characters of Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite presented by the Ballet Theatre of Dover. The event will take place on Friday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at The Old State House, located at 25 The Green, in Dover.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., one of Delaware’s most historic homes—the Buena Vista Conference Center south of New Castle—will be decorated for the holidays and will be offering special tours, plus ornament-making activities for children. Intrepid travelers can then make the short trip to old New Castle for the annual Spirit of Christmas in New Castle which includes activities at the New Castle Court House Museum.

Finally, on Dec. 6 and 20, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Dover’s John Dickinson Plantation will present “Handmade for the Holidays,” hands-on programs in which visitors can learn to create a sachet with herbs and spices (Dec. 6) and create a plaster ornament (Dec. 20).

John Dickinson’s birthday, candle-making and holiday crafts to be featured at Dover, Del.’s John Dickinson Plantation in November 2014

(DOVER, Del.—Nov. 7, 2014)—During the upcoming weeks in November, Dover, Del.’s John Dickinson Plantation will present five special programs that explore different aspects of everyday life as it would have been lived during the 18th century when John Dickinson was in residence at the property. Admission is free. For additional information, call 302-739-3277.

Highlights include John Dickinson’s Birthday Month celebrations on Thursdays, Nov. 13 and 20 during which visitors will have an opportunity to assist in the making of a great cake decorated with royal icing and shaped marzipan.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, the site will present two candle-making activities. The first, held in partnership with the St. Jones Reserve, will present a bayberry-candle workshop from 10 a.m.–Noon. Reservations for this workshop are required by calling the St. Jones Reserve at 302-739-3436. Between 1 and 3 p.m., the plantation will present “Light Me Up!,” a workshop on candle dipping and discussion of lighting devices of the 18th century. Reservations for this program are required by calling 302-739-3277 no later than Nov. 14.

Finally, on Saturday, Nov. 29, the plantation will present “Handmade for the Holidays,” a seasonal program in which visitors can learn to create and decorate cards through the art of paper quilling and stenciling, and write a personal note with a quill pen.

Smoking meats, hearth cooking, and candle making to be featured at Dover, Del.’s John Dickinson Plantation in September 2014

On Saturday, Sept. 27, the plantation will feature two programs. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., “Arts in the Estuary,” a partnership with the St. Jones Reserve, will celebrate National Estuaries Day from the artistic viewpoint including the work of artisans, performers and authors. Between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., the plantation will present “Smoked, Pickled and Salted for Survival,” a program in which visitors will learn how smoked, pickled and salted meats helped stretch food reserves in the winter. Visitors will also participate in pickling meats with brine and smoking meats in the property’s smokehouse. On Saturday, Sept. 20, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the site will present a hands-on workshop exploring hearth cooking; while on Thursdays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25, between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., the plantation will present “Taper Thursdays,” hands-on programs in which visitors will learn to make their own candles and help the plantation dip 200 candles that John Dickinson would have required from his tenants as part of their leases.

The John Dickinson Plantation was the boyhood home and country estate of John Dickinson, one of the founding fathers of the United States, signer of the U.S. Constitution and “Penman of the Revolution.” The plantation features Dickinson’s original 1740 brick home, reconstructed farm buildings and a log’d dwelling, surrounded by rich agricultural lands stretching down to the banks of the St. Jones River. Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs’ autumn 2014 programming provides a wide variety of ways to learn about Delaware history

The Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs will be sponsoring 60 special events between September and December 2014 at the state of Delaware’s six museums (The New Castle Court House Museum, the John Dickinson Plantation, the First State Heritage Park Welcome Center and Galleries, The Old State House, the Johnson Victrola Museum and the Zwaanendael Museum). Except for the September lecture/tours of His Majesty’s Sloop DeBraak, admission for all programs is free and open to the public. A complete listing of events is included below.

This programming is part of the division’s ongoing efforts to increase public activities at the state’s museums through simple, low-cost programs designed to not only attract new visitors, but to also offer inducements for people to make return visits to the facilities. Events include partnerships with community organizations, holiday activities, themed tours, expanded children’s programming and many others.

Administered by the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the museums of the state of Delaware tell the story of Delaware’s contributions to the history and culture of the United States. Through displays, exhibits and special programs, the museums explore how the state’s distinctive physical environment, in combination with the people who came to live there, gave Delaware an identity that is different from any other place.

William Penn Day. Series of programs commemorating the 332nd anniversary of Penn’s disembarkment at New Castle, his first landing in the New World. Activities at the New Castle Court House and The Green include a re-enactment of the Livery of Seizen ritual in which Penn received possession of New Castle and a 12-mile circle of land surrounding it; “Tea With Mrs. Penn”; a performance by De Blokfluiters recorder/flute ensemble; “The Trial of William Penn,” a historical play exploring Penn’s trial on religious freedom and the rights of English subjects under the law; and an evening concert of Baroque music by the Immanuel Bach Consort. and an evening concert by the University of Delaware Baroque Chamber Ensemble.
