Photographer Jeffrey Rubin to show work in the Mezzanine Gallery in October

The Delaware Division of the Arts Mezzanine Gallery is pleased to present Abstractions, an exhibition of photographic imagery by 2015 Individual Artist Fellow Jeffrey Rubin. The exhibition will be on view from October 2 – 30, with an opening reception on October 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. The Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.

Abstractions presents a selection of photographic interpretations of the natural world. Through recording and reinterpretation of the nature, the artist aims to represent the familiar in new ways.

As a body of work, these photographs are both intensely natural and intensely abstract. Influenced by abstract expressionism and other movements in art, they become fluid compositions of color, shape, and line. Part of the fluidity comes from the subjects which are selected, and are in an ever-changing state of flux. Whether it is ice and snow melting and re-freezing, salt drying and turning white amongst the new cracks in the pavement, everything is forever changing but also captured and frozen in time with the snap of the shutter. Rubin resides in Wilmington.

Artist Fellow B. Proud to show work in the Mezzanine Gallery in February

The Delaware Division of the Arts Mezzanine Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of original work by B. Proud from February 6 – 27, 2015. The exhibition, titled First Comes Love, presents a series of portraits of LGBTQ couples and is accompanied by their personal stories. The exhibition has traveled widely and has received numerous awards and grants. The First Comes Love project has also been collected in a hardbound book.

Proud is the recipient of a 2014 Delaware Division of the Arts Established Artist Professional Fellowship in Photography. She has traveled and exhibited her work widely. Proud works as both a fine art and commercial photographer and also instructs at The University of The Arts in Philadelphia. Proud lives and works in Wilmington, Delaware.

Artist Fellow Leon Syfrit to show work in the Mezzanine Gallery in October

The Delaware Division of the Arts Mezzanine Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of original work by 2014 Artist Fellow Leon Syfrit titled Passages from October 3 – 31, 2014. The Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington. A reception will be held for the exhibition where the public can meet the artist on Friday, October 3, 2014 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

The exhibition presents a selection of portraits exploring Erik Erikson’s theory of human psychological development. The series consists of male and female portraits representing each of the eight life stages presented in the theory.

The process for the production of the work is an in-depth combination of contemporary digital tools and traditional photographic processes and techniques. Syfrit first captures digital images of his subjects. These digital images are printed as negatives onto transparent film. The film negatives are then processed as cyanotypes through the chemical means of traditional photographic developing. The resultant prints are scanned back into the digital realm where the object qualities of the print are heightened and revealed. The scans are finally output as inkjet prints to complete the image-making process.

Syfrit’s work is represented in several regional collections. He works throughout the tri-state area and serves as an instructor at the Delaware College of Art and Design.
