Our children rely on us for so much – guidance, support, safety. We have a tremendous opportunity to be a positive force as they navigate through childhood and build a foundation for their future. But it’s more than an opportunity – it’s our responsibility. Children look to us to be role models, to make good choices, to be champions for what’s best for them. This responsibility is most critical when it comes to their safety and well-being.

Last year in Delaware, over 14,000 reports of child abuse, neglect and dependency were received by the Division of Family Services. That is a horrifying number. But even more troubling is that research shows a majority of child abuse incidents go unreported.

This month – April – is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child advocates across the country and here in Delaware are focused on raising awareness about the signs of child abuse and the importance of reporting suspected abuse to the 24- hour report line.
