Delaware is blessed with beautiful beaches, parks, scenic farmland, a vibrant arts community, and a rich cultural and historic heritage. Preserving and strengthening that quality of life is vital to our state’s future. As part of our efforts, we’re committed to improving recreational and outdoors opportunities by making Delaware a more walkable, bikeable state. Events like the 7th Annual Tour of Delaware Bike Ride or the River Towns Ride and Festival held last weekend showcase just a portion of the many trails and pathways available in the First State and the progress we’ve made. This is an integral part of our economic development strategy – and not only because it’s good for tourism. Businesses want to go where the talent is and talented people want to work in places where they and their families want to live. In the coming week, I’ll join Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf for the Sussex Outdoors Summit at the Stockley Center near Georgetown, where we’ll announce recommendations on expanded uses for the 750-acre campus that support our quality of life initiatives. And I’ll join former Congressman Mike Castle, as we celebrate the opening of the Mike Castle C&D Canal Trail, a 16-mile long shared-use recreational trail offering safe, recreational opportunities such as hiking, cycling, bird watching or horse riding. The investments we continue to make in our trails and pathways not only support our overall health and well-being, they help grow our economy, make our state a magnet for talented workers and keep Delaware moving forward.
