College is an Options for Individuals with Disabilities ~ Stepping Up to the Challenge.

What better month than March to release a video entitled. Why? Because  March is Intellectual Disability (IDD) Awareness Month. This month reminds us to look at the past, examine the present and envision the future we want for people with IDD.  More importantly, it is an opportunity to learn more about intellectual disabilities and how to eliminate the stigma surrounding IDD.

The Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens (GACEC) is pleased to inform the community about a newly released video  Click Here to watch on YouTube. The video emphasizes that individuals with disabilities can attend college.

Students with intellectual disabilities and their parents speak out about the college experience in the University of Delaware’s, Center for Disabilities Studies CLSC program.   College fun, parental fears and life skills needed to attend college are discussed. It is very encouraging and uplifting to watch the decisions that students and parents had to make about college.

Delaware Disability Hub www.deldhub.com has a section under Education called Higher Education to get additional information on going to college.  Deldhub is a transition website for youth with disabilities, their parents/caregivers and teachers of special education.

The Governor’s Advisory Council for Exceptional Citizens (GACEC) serves as the review board for policies, procedures and practices related to the delivery of services for all residents in Delaware with exceptionalities or disabilities from birth to death. GACEC also serves as an advisory panel for agencies providing educational services and programs to children through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
