That’s why one of our top goals has been giving all Delaware families access to high-quality early learning programs and why I made early childhood funding one of my top budget priorities this year. It supports social and emotional development, helps even the playing field for children across socio-economic levels, and puts all kids on the path to meeting their full potential. The efforts of state leaders, advocates, and, most importantly, teachers and other staff are paying off.

Wilmington, DE – In his weekly message, Governor Markell highlights the efforts of the state to give all Delaware families access to high-quality early learning programs.
“The first few years of a child’s life are crucial to his or her success. That’s why one of our top goals has been giving all Delaware families access to high-quality early learning programs and why I made early childhood funding one of my top budget priorities this year,” Governor Markell said. “These efforts show how Delaware and the Obama Administration’s historic investments in early learning can make immediate and lasting change in the lives of our children. Governor Signs Bill Closing Gun Background Check Loophole

Building on the state’s efforts to implement responsible gun safety laws, Governor Markell today signed legislation to close a loophole that allows people to purchase firearms without passing a background check. House Bill 325, which received final approval from the General Assembly Wednesday, extends from three to 25 days the amount of time for a background check to be completed before a gun buyer may complete his or her purchase. It will not affect the vast majority of purchases since more than 91 percent of background checks are completed within minutes or, at most, hours.
