2013 Delaware Traffic Fatality Report Shows Fatal Traffic Decline

Delaware Office of Highway Safety officials are pleased to announce a 13.6% drop in fatal traffic crashes, and an even greater 14.6% drop in Delaware’s traffic deaths for 2013. There were 95 fatal motor vehicle crashes resulting in 99 fatalities in 2013 compared to 110 fatal crashes resulting in 116 fatalities in 2012. This is the first time traffic fatalities have been under 100 in the last 50 years on First State roadways.

OHS Launches 15th Annual Safe Family Holiday Campaign Thanksgiving Week

Once again thousands of Delawareans will be hitting the road to visit family and friends and even do some after Thanksgiving shopping. The Office of Highway Safety wants to remind motorists as they travel this holiday season to buckle up, practice patience behind the wheel, and if partaking in some holiday ‘spirits’ use a designated driver because Delaware law enforcement will be on high alert to make sure you arrive safely to your destination.

Buckle Up. No Excuses.

Did you know that not everyone buckles up when they get into a vehicle? Of the twenty-nine (29) vehicle occupants killed this year in Delaware, 53% were not wearing a seat belt. That is one of many reasons the Office of Highway Safety along with officers from participating State, County and municipal law enforcement agencies are continuing to enforce Delaware’s seat belt law. Dedicated overtime patrols start July 21st and run through August 8th.

2013 Click It Or Ticket Enforcement Results

Over the past two weeks, officers from approximately 30 State, County, and municipal law enforcement agencies issued a total of 1,010 citations to unbuckled motorists during the 12th annual Click It or Ticket campaign. The enforcement portion of the campaign ran from May 13th through 27th and involved traffic safety checkpoints and saturation patrols both day and night along with Border to Border enforcement collaboration of police agencies.

271 Motorists Cited For Not Buckling Up At Night

Two hundred seventy-one (271) motorists were cited for not buckle up at night during the first seat belt enforcement campaign of 2013. Officers from 6 police departments plus Delaware State Police worked over 421 hours of overtime enforcement looking for unbelted motorists.
