Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: New Ways to Support our Entrepreneurs

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | News | Date Posted: Friday, February 6, 2015

We have no more important goal than to ensure a good job is available for every Delawarean who wants one. That means making Delaware a great place to start and grow a business. With so many companies investing here, it’s clear that we are moving in the right direction. More than 200 new jobs at Energizer in Dover. SevOne is adding 150 jobs at UD’s STAR Campus. And Perdue is moving its agribusinesses headquarters along with 150 jobs to Sussex County. Because of companies like these, our job growth is more than three times faster than our neighboring states. But our work is not done. We must remain committed to removing unnecessary obstacles and giving our entrepreneurs the best opportunity to start and expand their companies. It’s why we recently modified or eliminated well over one hundred regulations. I’m asking the General Assembly to make that regulatory review process part of state law, and to require government to produce an impact statement on any new regulation. We must strive to ensure regulations don’t impose unnecessary burdens.

But some regulations, as well as businesses licenses and permits, are necessary to protect the well-being of our citizens. So this past week, we launched a website, with support from the business community, to ensure entrepreneurs can easily find and understand what’s required for them to operate in Delaware. The Business First Steps website includes resources for almost 200 types of businesses, including how to get licenses, certifications, and permits. It will particularly help new and small businesses meet state, county, and local government requirements. By supporting our entrepreneurs through this process, we’ll make it more likely that they will grow in our state, and that will keep Delaware moving forward.
