Governor Honors Delaware’s Veterans

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | Office of the Governor | Date Posted: Friday, November 11, 2011

Names Veteran to Supplier Diversity Council

Delaware State SealGovernor Jack Markell will join veterans, families, and officials today to celebrate Veterans Day and honor those who served the state and the nation.

“For hundreds of years, so many Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Markell. “They put their lives on the line to join our armed forces – defending our nation and earning along the way the noble title of Veteran. That service is remembered with particular reverence and honor this Veterans Day.”

To mark the beginning of a special Veterans Day Service at the War Memorial Plaza at the Delaware Memorial Bridge, the Delaware National Guard will conduct a C-130 Fly-Over. The crews flying served in Afghanistan earlier this year.

The Governor also recently announced the appointment of L.J. Nick Callazzo III to the State’s Supplier Diversity Council as a representative of veteran-owned businesses.

“I am very enthusiastic for the opportunity to work with the Governor in helping veterans better understand critical success factors in starting a new business and sustaining an existing one,” said Callazzo.

On September 6th, Governor Markell signed Executive Order 29, which expanded the State’s Supplier Diversity Council to include veteran-owned businesses. The Council was established at the end of 2009 to increase the participation of minority and/or women business enterprises in State contracting and procurement.

A retired Delaware Air National Guard colonel, Rep. Earl Jaques has advocated for efforts that would better enable veteran-owned companies to do business with the state.

“Our veterans have served our state and country with distinction, putting their lives on hold and on the line for us,” said Rep. Jaques, D-Glasgow. “Increasing contracting opportunities with veteran-owned businesses is a prudent way of giving back to them. Having a veteran serve on the Supplier Diversity Council will help make our state and its operations more veteran-friendly, and I thank Governor Markell for his commitment to veterans.”

Callazzo was selected as ‘The Outstanding Marine Recruit’, at Parris Island, in January 1957. As an entrepreneur, he brings decades of experience building a business and serving as an executive coach and teacher.
