The legal debacle over mifepristone underscores how easily a small group of extremist plaintiffs can abuse the judicial system to force draconian, unscientific, and undemocratic laws on the nation.

These questions should not even be up for debate: mifepristone has a safer track record than Viagra. But we live in an era where women once against must contend with these kinds of officially-sanctioned double standards, where any settled law can be upended by deep-pocketed campaigns with crackpot legal theories. The Supreme Court did its duty here, for now, by acting as a temporary guardrail on the excesses of a lower court — but we are taking nothing for granted and will continue to fight unconditionally for safe, legal abortion access.
