Community Preparedness Workshop for Seniors and People With Disabilities

Delaware Emergency Management Agency | Date Posted: Thursday, March 15, 2018

(Smyrna) – Are you prepared for an emergency or disaster? Disasters can strike suddenly, anytime and anywhere, and first responders may not be able to get to you right away.

Delaware Citizen Corps, Independent Resources, Inc., the Modern Maturity Center and the Division of Public Health (DPH)-Office of Preparedness are partnering to hold a Community Preparedness Workshop for Seniors and People with Disabilities. The workshop will be held on Monday, April 16, 2018 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover (1121 Forrest Ave., Dover, Del., 19904), from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. The workshop is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to talk with our preparedness partner exhibitors while enjoying the complimentary continental breakfast items.

What can you do to help yourself, your family, and your neighbors if an emergency or disaster happens? The major goal of this workshop is to better equip seniors and people with disabilities with knowledge to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies at home and disasters in their communities. Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) Director A.J. Schall states, “As the United States saw multiple devastating disasters in 2017, it reminds us that it can happen to anyone at any time. Regardless of ability or age, we must ensure everyone obtains the information and guidance they need for a comprehensive emergency plan.”

Speakers will include trainers from the Office of Preparedness and Delaware Citizen Corps as well as a specialist from the Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative (DATI). The workshop will also feature several interactive components focusing on how to make a plan, create a kit, and learn about fire safety. In addition, a raffle will be held at the end of the workshop for a variety of preparedness items. Director Schall emphasizes, “It is a pleasure for DEMA and Citizen Corps to partner with DPH-Office of Preparedness, Independent Resources, Inc., and Modern Maturity Center in this effort.”

To register for this free workshop, you call the Modern Maturity Center at 302-731-1200 ext. 167 or go online to Eventbrite at https://tinyurl.com/ya8arza4. If you are a person with a hearing impairment or require an interpreter, call Independent Resources, Inc. at 302-735-4599.
