Emergency Responders Reminded of I-95 Ramp Closure

Smyrna —  The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), joins with the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) to remind motorists of an upcoming ramp closure exiting I-95 that will affect emergency responders.

Effective July 17, the exit ramp south of the Christiana Mall onto Route 1 northbound and I-95 northbound will be closed. The closures are necessary due to the construction of the overfly ramps from I-95 southbound onto Route 1 southbound. The closure will remain in effect until late fall of this year.

Traffic detours setup:

To Northbound I-95 (effective July 23 at 11:00 p.m.)

Turn left onto the Mall Ring Road and follow around until you pass Nordstrom on your left and the Park-and-Ride on your right. Take the next right onto the ramp to I-95 North.

To Southbound I-95

Turn right onto the Mall Ring Road and follow around until you pass Target. At the next exit, turn left toward Michaels/Pier 1. At next intersection turn right. At the traffic signal, go straight and then bear right onto the ramp for Route 1/Route 7 North. Follow Route 1/7 through I-95 underpass. Take next right onto ramp to I-95 South.

To Southbound Route 1

Follow the Mall Ring Road to the bridge exit, opposite Macys. Bear to the right after crossing the bridge. At the next intersection continue straight onto the on-ramp for Southbound Route 1.

To Northbound Route 7

Turn right onto  the Mall Ring Road and follow around until you pass Target. At the next exit, turn left toward Michaels/Pier 1. At next intersection turn right. At the traffic signal, go straight and then bear right onto the ramp for Route 1/ Route 7 North.

To Southbound Route 7

Follow the Mall Ring Road to the bridge exit, opposite Macys. Bear to the right after crossing the bridge. At the next intersection turn right. At the T-intersection turn left onto Southbound Route 7.

Signs will be posted to alert and direct traffic. Informational posters and handouts will be available at various locations throughout the Christiana Mall.

Increasing traffic volumes and development south of Route 1 has led to deteriorating levels of service within the area of the Christiana Mall and the I-95 & Route 1 Interchange. While morning and evening traffic volumes continue to struggle, this area also has deteriorating traffic conditions at many other times of the day and often throughout weekends.

Emergency responders who use the area to access Christiana Hospital should be aware of the changes and adjust routes accordingly.
