Three Delaware festivals among Top 100 group tour events for 2013

News | Date Posted: Tuesday, October 16, 2012

DOVER, DE (Oct. 16, 2012) – The organizers of the Dover Days Festival will have more than one reason to celebrate in 2013.

The festival not only marks its 80th anniversary next May, but also has made the American Bus Association’s list of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2013 for the first time ever.

The American Bus Association (ABA) chose two other Delaware events that were also on the 2012 list: the Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddler’s Festival and World Championship Punkin Chunkin.

The ABA evaluates hundreds of nominations for fairs, festivals, parades, exhibits, theater performances and other shows and selects those that are best to experience on a group tour. The resulting list is coveted by travel professionals, motorcoach operators and the general public.

Dover Days
drew 38,000 people over three days this year and includes a car show, crafts vendors, Maypole Dancing on The Green, a plein air festival and fireworks. It was lauded by ABA for celebrating the state capital city’s “heritage, community spirit” and “Colonial and Victorian traditions mixed with modern twists.”

The 80th anniversary celebration of Dover Days will be held May 3-5, 2013, in Delaware’s state capital.

The Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddler’s Festival
draws more than 150,000 people to Rehoboth with its massive parade, 5K run, costume contests, food vendors and entertainment and typically takes place in late October. This year’s festival will be held Oct. 26-28.

World Championship Punkin Chunkin
is a nationally known event where contestants fling pumpkins with cannons, sling shots and their own brute strength and attendees tailgate and take in music between the hurling competitions. It brings more than 80,000 people to Bridgeville each year, and is usually held the first week of November. This year’s competition and festivities take place Nov. 2-4.

The 2013 Top 100 Events in North America are featured in a supplement in the September/October issue of Destinations magazine.
