Public Comment Sought on Draft All-Hazard Mitigation Plan

(Smyrna) – The State of Delaware All-Hazard Mitigation plan is undergoing a comprehensive review and evaluation, as required every five years by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  The plan focuses on natural and human-caused hazards, and how to mitigate the adverse effects of disasters.  The revision provides an opportunity to examine changes to mitigation actions, ensure that the plan is in full compliance with applicable federal regulations and state laws, and that goals and objectives remain current.

The purposes of the plan are to protect life, safety and property by reducing the potential for future damages and economic losses.  This also meets the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and qualifies the state for additional grant funding for pre-and-post disasters.

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency is responsible for maintaining the State of Delaware All-Hazard Mitigation plan.  DEMA has conducted a review and a draft of the revised plan has been developed.  Public comment on the draft revisions is being sought.

Copies of the Draft All-Hazard Mitigation Plan are available for public review in the following libraries across the state:

New Castle County:

New Castle Public Library – 424 Delaware St., New Castle, DE

Brandywine Hundred Library – 1300 Foulk Rd., Wilmington, DE

Delaware City Public Library – 250 5th St., Delaware City, DE

Newark Free Library – 750 Library Ave., Newark, DE

Kent County:

Kent County Public Library – 497 S. Red Haven Rd., Dover, DE

Dover Public Library – 35 Loockerman Plaza, Dover, DE

Milford Public Library – 11. S.E. Front St., Milford, DE

Sussex County:

Bridgeville Public Library – 600 S. Cannon St., Bridgeville, DE

Milton Public Library – 121 Union St., Milton, DE

Millsboro Public Library – 217 W. State St., Millsboro, DE

Rehoboth Beach Public Library – 226 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE

South Coastal Public Library – 43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach, DE

Visitors may review the plan at those locations and comment.  Comments forms will be available with the plan; interested parties may take a form home, provide comments and mail their response to DEMA.  Comments may also be left online; go to www.dema.delaware.gov, scroll down the page to “Contact Information”, then click on the green “Contact DEMA” box.  Comments forms may also be obtained by calling DEMA at 302-659-2200.
