Governor’s Weekly Message: Supporting Small Business During Your Holiday Shopping

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | News | Date Posted: Friday, December 2, 2011

Dover –  In his weekly message, the Governor talks about the importance of selecting small businesses while doing your holiday shopping.  There are about 19,000 small-business employers in Delaware and every one of them would appreciate your business during the holiday season.

“One way you can give a gift to yourself while shopping for friends or family is to shop at local and small businesses here in Delaware,” said Governor Markell.  “Your money, when spent locally,  not only helps to keep Delawareans working – it’s money that can then be used by small business owners to support other small and local businesses – and from it, the benefits to our economy keep growing.”

The Governor visits dozens of small businesses throughout the year and so often, he says they tell him, “if only more people here knew the kind of quality work we do or products we supply – if only we could get more people in the door, I know that we could turn them into customers.”  That’s one of the reasons the Governor declared the Saturday after Thanksgiving to be “Small Business Saturday” in Delaware, adding Delaware to a national movement to highlight how hard small business owners are working and how much they have to offer.

“I’m encouraging you to share your experiences, to spread the word that our state has so many entrepreneurs working hard to serve your family while having a chance to support their own. Small business employers here in Delaware would be happy to help you – not just for the holidays, but throughout the year. Delawareans supporting Delawareans not only gives us the chance to make the holidays brighter, it helps keep our state moving forward.”

Also, this week, the new Delaware-made 2012 Value Added Food Guide was made available on-line. By purchasing Delaware made value added products, you will be supporting Delaware small businesses that contribute jobs and revenue to the State, while at the same time enjoying quality and sometime unusual products that delight the taste buds and enhance the holiday experience.   The Guide is full of delicious items perfect for people who love to receive food and beverage gifts during the holiday season and all through the year.  In the guide (available here), shoppers will find ales, beers, & wines, baked goods, ice cream, jams and jellies, marinades & sauces, meats & cheeses, and more.
