Arts in the Estuary celebration set for Sept. 28 at St. Jones Reserve; Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve’s 20th anniversary event includes the Delaware Native Plant Society’s Annual Plant Sale

To celebrate the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve’s 20th anniversary, the St. Jones Reserve is holding an event – Arts in the Estuary – and the Delaware Native Plant Society’s Annual Native Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28. Admission is free to the event, being held, rain or shine, at the Reserve, 818 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover and at the John Dickinson Plantation located next to the Reserve at 340 Kitts Hummock Road – two of the most treasured natural and cultural areas in Delaware.

Governor Markell joined officers from the American Birding Association (ABA) to announce the ABA’s plans to move its North American headquarters from Colorado to Delaware next year.

At an event along the Wilmington riverfront commemorating Sea level Rise Awareness Week, Governor Jack Markell signed an executive order creating a Governor’s Committee on Climate and Resiliency to oversee development of an implementation plan to maintain and build upon Delaware’s leadership in responsibly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and develop agency-specific actionable recommendations for improving Delaware’s preparedness and resiliency to climate impacts.

At the DuPont Environmental Education Center on the Wilmington Riverfront, Governor Jack Markell, DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara, EPA Region 3 Administrator Shawn M. Garvin, Delaware Nature Society Exec. Dir. Brian Winslow and Delaware Wild Lands Exec. Dir. Kate Hackett joined with environmental organizations to announce the kick-off of Delaware’s first Sea Level Rise Awareness Week, Sept. 14 – 22. The week of activities, being sponsored by 14 Delaware environmental advocacy groups, was organized to raise awareness and encourage citizens to take actions to help reduce the potential impacts of sea level rise and climate change.




Horse with West Nile Virus recovering, doing well

A Kent County horse has tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Department of Agriculture announced today. The horse, which is recovering well, is Delaware’s first confirmed equine case of West Nile Virus since 2003, said Delaware State Veterinarian Dr. Heather Hirst, who urged equine owners to get their horses vaccinated.
