DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife announces hunters harvested 564 wild turkeys during 2019 season

DOVER – Delaware’s month-long spring wild turkey hunting season, which ended May 11, yielded a harvest of 564 birds, slightly lower than last year’s harvest of 571 birds, DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife announced today. Toms (males at least two years of age) accounted for 439 of the harvested birds this year, representing 78 percent of the total harvest. Harvests during this year’s turkey season weekly segments were 254 the first week, 120 the second week, 72 the third week, and 99 the fourth week. This year’s total harvest also included 19 birds harvested by youth hunters during the special youth/non-ambulatory disabled hunt day on April 6.
DNREC Natural Resources Police Park Rangers charge Seaford angler with landing a prohibited shark species

DOVER – Following a tip made from within Delaware Seashore State Park, DNREC’s Natural Resources Police Park Rangers charged a Seaford man with landing a prohibited shark species, in connection with taking a sandbar shark out of the water while fishing June 11 at 3 Rs beach within the park.
Jay Katz, 65, was cited by Park Rangers for one count of catching and removing from the water a prohibited shark species. Katz was released, with his surf fishing permit suspended, pending an appearance in the Court of Common Pleas in Georgetown at a later date.
DNREC advises that public comment period for Coastal Zone Conversion Permit Act regulations continues through July 9

DOVER – In accordance with the Coastal Zone Conversion Permit Act, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and Delaware’s Coastal Zone Industrial Control Board (CZICB) held a joint public hearing June 24 on proposed amendments to the Regulations Governing Delaware’s Coastal Zone, as set forth in 7 DE Admin. Code 101. DNREC also reminds the public that the public comment period for the proposed amendments to Coastal Zone regulations remains open through close of business Tuesday, July 9, 2019. DNREC’s Natural Resource Police Park Rangers conduct surf-fishing enforcement operation at two coastal state parks

FENWICK ISLAND – On Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16, DNREC’s Division of Parks & Recreation’s Natural Resource Police Rangers conducted a targeted enforcement operation for compliance with Delaware’s surf fishing regulations at surf fishing beaches and surf crossings at Fenwick Island and Cape Henlopen State Parks. The operation was in response to complaints of surf-fishers failing to abide by regulations, particularly the “actively engaged” rule for fishing from the beach.
Delaware Native Species Commission to meet June 19 in Dover
