In his weekly message, Governor Markell speaks to the dedication of first responders, especially remembering the service of New Castle County Police officer, Sergeant Joseph Szczerba, whose life was tragically cut short in the line of duty when he was stabbed after chasing a suspect.

Many have confronted this disease with courage and we are committed to making progress in their name.”
“Joe Szczerba left his home each day and went to work proud to protect and serve the communities he loved. His death is a tragedy, but his life and his service are an inspiration. While we cannot fathom the pain this has caused his family, our state grieves with them. We will never forget his service or his sacrifice,” Markell said.
