Federal and state officials, conservation partners celebrate two $1M grants benefitting Delaware’s Bayshore and beyond

Among the lush fields and tidal marshland of Delaware’s Bayshore east of Dover, Delaware officials and conservation partners were joined by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Deputy Director Steve Guertin to celebrate the purchase, protection and conservation of the Vance Morris Tract – nearly 750 acres of key coastal Bayshore lands bordering the Ted Harvey Conservation Area.

A five-member team of high school students from Charter School of Wilmington took seventh place in the North American Envirothon, the continent’s largest high school environmental competition.

Governor Jack Markell, DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara and U.S. EPA Region III Administrator Shawn M. Garvin honored Terry Higgins of Marydel with the 2013 Delaware Wetland Warrior Award for his lifelong efforts to conserve, restore and educate Delaware residents on the need for and importance of wetlands.




New artificial bait developed by U of D from project funded by DNREC could reduce number of horseshoe crabs used to catch eel and whelk

A new alternative bait product that will help reduce the number of horseshoe crabs harvested from the Delaware Bay was introduced today. A team of University of Delaware researchers led by Dr. Nancy Targett, DuPont scientists, fisheries biologists, watermen and conservation groups were joined by DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara to make the announcement this morning at UD’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.




Nominations sought for Delaware’s 2013 Wetland Warrior: Award honors exemplary efforts that benefit the state’s wetlands

DNREC’s Wetland Monitoring and Assessment Program is seeking nominations for the 2013 Delaware Wetland Warrior Award, which recognizes exemplary efforts to protect wetlands and the critical services they provide to all Delawareans.
