Dover – Attorney General Beau Biden today proposed adding prosecutors to enhance his office’s response to homicides, shootings and nuisance crimes.

In the Department of Justice’s annual presentation to the state Office of Management and Budget, Biden asked that funding for the additional prosecutors be included in the Governor’s Recommended Budget for fiscal year 2014.  The Governor’s recommendations are released in late January and the new budget year begins July 1.

Specifically, Biden requested:
• $206,400 to add a prosecutor, investigator and paralegal to the Department’s New Castle County Homicide Unit;
• $102,000 for a prosecutor to focus on shootings in the City of Wilmington; and
• $80,500 for a prosecutor who will specialize in criminal nuisance abatement matters that affect the safety and quality of life of neighborhood residents.
In addition to those three crime-fighting requests, Biden is also seeking:
• $200,000 to fund annual maintenance expenses related to the Department’s new case management system, and $100,000 to replace 100 out-of-date computers;
• $80,500 for a new Deputy Attorney General assigned to Freedom of Information Act issues;
• $80,500 for a new Deputy Attorney General focused on child abuse cases;
• $50,000 for the department’s Summer Law Clerk program;
• $491,000 to convert part-time positions to permanent full-time positions; and
• $470,000 in pass-thru funding for statewide domestic violence shelters operated by Child, Inc. and People’s Place II.
