Governor’s Weekly Message Transcript: Identifying Top Talent in Cyber Security

Former Governor Jack Markell (2009-2017) | News | Date Posted: Friday, September 13, 2013

The need to secure our personal information and computer networks has never been greater. With every aspect of our lives increasingly connected to the internet, cyber threats are one of the most serious economic and national security challenges that we face. Our banks, our power companies, our water plants, medical facilities all are vulnerable, and private companies have got to protect their research and consumer information from hackers. As more and more companies join governments in realizing the importance of hiring high quality, cyber security professionals, it’s really important that we provide an environment in which the next generation of these experts can learn and gain employment opportunities in this rapidly growing field. That’s why, earlier this week, I helped launch Delaware’s Cyber Aces program here at the Charter School of Wilmington. It’s designed to provide education and job skills training through a series of free, online lessons and competitive assessments. The program is targeted towards high school and college students, veterans and those looking to enter or re-enter the workforce and is supported by the nonprofit group Cyber Aces, in conjunction with Delaware state agencies, colleges and universities and private employers. The Delaware Cyber Aces program aligns with our commitment to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education in our schools, supports our efforts to close the unemployment gap for Delaware veterans and military personnel and builds on the robust degree and certificate programs offered across the first state. You can learn more about the program by visiting cyberaces dot org. That’s cyberaces dot org. By providing new opportunities for our future workforce to develop the skills needed to compete for in-demand jobs, we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.
