Sussex County Man Tests Positive for West Nile Virus
The Division of Public Health (DPH) is announcing that a 60-year-old Sussex County man has tested positive for the state’s first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in 2018. The man was briefly hospitalized for illness in July and after a preliminary positive test result from the DPH Laboratory in Smyrna, the blood sample was sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmatory testing. WNV, a mosquito-borne illness, can become serious, and DPH reminds people to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

DPH Seeking Public Input On How to Reach Residents During Emergencies
The Division of Public Health (DPH) is seeking the public’s input to develop the most clear and effective ways to reach Delawareans in the event of emergency situations such as hurricanes, flooding, serious illness outbreaks, industrial accidents, and power outages. Over the next several weeks, DPH will survey Delaware residents via email and in-person small group discussions to better understand how to best reach residents with the most accurate and up-to-date information during an emergency event. The information will be used to develop a meaningful Emergency Public Information and Warning Plan for the State of Delaware.
DPH Announces Two More Flu-Related Deaths, Urges Delawareans To Increase Prevention Measures
Influenza continues to significantly impact Delaware for the 216-2017 flu season. The Division of Public Health (DPH) announced today the fourth and fifth flu-related fatalities in Delaware for the current season, as well as a continued sharp increase in cases for those ages 0 – 24. Both of the deceased individuals were elderly, and had multiple underlying health conditions in addition to being infected with influenza. The first week of February, an 86-year-old Kent County man, residing in a nursing home, passed away after being transported to the hospital. Last week, a 90-year-old New Castle County man who lived at home passed away. He had also been transported to the hospital as a result of his illness. Both men were infected with Influenza A.
