Biden: U.S. Supreme Court Ruling ‘A Major Step Forward’ for Equality

Department of Justice | Department of Justice Press Releases | Date Posted: Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Wilmington – Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden released the following statement Tuesday in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in United States v. Windsor that declared the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional:

“It is about time. Loving, committed same-sex couples have waited too long to have their unions recognized by their country.”

“All Delawareans will soon enjoy the freedom to marry the person they love, but until today’s ruling, those Delaware marriages would not have been equal under federal law. Now those marriages will be recognized by the federal government.”

“Denying recognition to loving couples who happen to be of the same sex is discriminatory, wrong and unconstitutional. Today’s ruling is a major step forward for that basic principle on which our nation was founded: equality for all.”

In February, Biden and other Attorneys General filed a legal brief with the Court in the US v. Windsor case, urging the Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act.
