Governor John Carney and Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski joined
in the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new interchange project in Milton

Milton – Governor John Carney and Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski joined in the groundbreaking for the start of construction on the more than $40 million Route 1 and 16 Grade Separated Interchange project that will improve safety and reduce congestion.

The project consists of the construction of a grade separation (bridge and entrance/exit ramps) at the intersection of SR 1 and SR 16 near Milton that will replace the current signalized intersection. The project includes elevating SR 1 over SR 16 with new dual bridges to provide free flowing movements in both the northbound and southbound direction, entrance/exit ramps to and from SR 16, turn lanes on SR 16 at the ramp intersections, realignment of the intersection at SR 1 and Deep Branch Road, construction of stormwater management facilities, roadside swales, and installation of lighting.

Governor John Carney commented, “These projects not only improve our transportation infrastructure, but they also provide hundreds of jobs for our construction industry. As Sussex County continues to grow, we are making investments to meet those needs with more than $1.3 billion of work planned in Sussex over the next six years.”

“Since 2009, we have completed seven grade separated interchanges along Route 1 south of Dover and this project is another step in our work to limit the number of access points where vehicles enter and exit the highway to improve safety and reduce congestion as part of our Corridor Capacity Preservation Program,” said Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski.

The project is being built by A-Del Construction and the new interchange is expected to be completed in late 2025.
