Fire Commission Releases New Updates for EMS Protocols

The Delaware State Fire Commission has recently announced the implementation of new updated emergency medical services (EMS) protocols aimed at improving healthcare response in critical situations. These protocols were established after extensive consultations with medical professionals, emergency responders, and other stakeholders in the healthcare industry. The objective is to ensure a consistent and standardized approach to emergency care across the state. The new updated protocols cover a wide range of medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest, trauma, and respiratory distress, among others. They specify the appropriate procedures and treatments to be administered by EMS personnel, ensuring that patients receive the most effective and evidence-based care possible. Additionally, the protocols emphasize the importance of clear communication among all healthcare providers involved in an emergency response, facilitating a seamless transition of care from the initial scene to the hospital. Continuous medical education and training will be provided to EMS personnel to ensure their proficiency in implementing the updated protocols. Delaware EMS protocols are required to be reviewed and updated every two years. With the implementation of these updated protocols, emergency medical services will be better equipped to handle critical situations, offering a higher level of care, and potentially saving more lives. Training will be provided to all emergency medical service providers (EMTs) prior to the protocols going into effect on November 1, 2024.

The Commissioners would like to thank the following agencies for their continued support in reviewing and updating the protocol standards.  Delaware Office of Emergency Services, Delaware State Fire School, Kent, Sussex, and New Castle County Fire and Ambulance Associations as well as the Office of the Delaware State Medical Directors.
